I saw a bunch of older amps and reissues at a local store for what I think is crazy money and I remembered that I saw a link for some complete DIY kits from Tube Garden.http://www.tubegarden.com/
I have a little experience with electronics (not a lot) and I wondered if anyone here has tackled such a project.Any insight would be appreciated!

$385.00 is a helluva deal for the Champ 5F1 complete kit. That speaker sounds great. I have the Weber Signature 8 and now I'm thinking the Jensen PR8 might be cool. Mine has very early breakup which I like tho.
I built mine about 6 months ago and use it a lot.
I got a left over that didn't get built and sold by a Boutique company and it had no instructions. The original Fender schematic has a ground wire left out. Once I figured that out, it was no problem, just took a lot of time to build it slow and right. I bought vintage style wiring and better caps. Decided to make a single point ground as a mod and put a Fender badge on it.
This is much better than buying a 30 year old amp and then having to replace all the caps and maybe a speaker before it sounds right.
I'm lusting for the 18 watt Marshall too but the prices are too much. Anyone have a line on an economical one?

Weber makes a "vintage" speaker, think more in terms of the original Jensen than the reissue ones.
He runs an EXTREMELY tight voice coil gap, and his speakers do not take much mechanical abuse at all. Another SG Schematic (my thanks to Lagger)

No what I'm saying is they are critical for getting mounted correctly, not over-tightening the mount, for making sure the baffle is DEAD flat too. You put .010 twist on that thing and woops, its rubbing. He's got the tightest coil gaps in the industry....
He also gets a lot of returns - speakers bent a little... just a LITTLE .. in shipping.
However, if set up well, and installed critically, they do have a nice tone. Another SG Schematic (my thanks to Lagger)

TNT,
Why buy a static powerbrake for $399.00 when you can get a Weber MASS for $250.00? The MASS is active and works with the amp. The powerbrake is a bunch of coils that get hot and eventually break from the temp cycling and do not work with the amp.SG Standard

I bleed them thru a 10K 2 watt resistor---clip on one end- wire-resistor-wire-clip. After they bleed down I clip plates and other high voltage supply, etc., to ground depending on what I'm doing! Those tiny blue sparks will make you hang from the ceiling like a cat if one bites you.

Vox , what I made is a 20k resistor... dont need the wattage... i think I got 1/8 watt or so, maybe 1/4.... and stuck it up a test probe handle... the other end has a alligator clip.
And.... I somehow find a way to solder in a bleed-down resistor... even 1meg does it just fine. 1 meg, half watt cuz I got em... from highest b+ to ground. The amp never sees it, and you get bleed-down in 10 or 15 seconds Another SG Schematic (my thanks to Lagger)

I still always check the bleed down's, a waste of time I know but I don't want to ever get too comfortable around high voltage, and coming from a guy who works on amps with them on! Not recommended folks unless you know what your doing, in that case, dig in

The reg kit is $385.00.As you can see in red, there is a budget version on there that is $290.00.Click on "Champ Amp" and get the low down.I have not built one yet but read that there is a tech support forum on Tubegarden's site.

Read over the whole site and listen to the sound files and such to make up your mind.
They can help you or CharlieB,Voxman, and others here should be able to help.My name is TNT,and I have approved this message.

TNT,
Why buy a static powerbrake for $399.00 when you can get a Weber MASS for $250.00?
