Does anyone do this? I've only seen a vid of Sister Rosetta wearing her SG thus. Maybe it was a comfort thing for her, being + sized.

I wouldn't do it to an SG in particular. Their neck joints are known to be kind of fragile.

If you do this you will find the guitar forever bouncing in and out of tune as the neck is stressed. Don't do it.

For sure I'd never do it. This was another "I was just curious" type posts. Has anyone done it besides Sister Rosetta?

There's no remaining footage of how he strapped his SG...

    I don’t.

But, Rosetta Tharpe seemed to have changed things up depending on the guitar. In images of her playing a Les Paul, she seems to have worn the strap normally. With her SG, she seems to have preferred attaching at the headstock. With larger bodied guitars, she often is seen attaching at the headstock, as well. Though, even then, sometimes she wears the strap normally. I’m guessing she just did whatever felt best for a particular guitar.

    Yeah...and it can create problems.

I have an Epiphone John Lennon J-160E (a far cheaper version of The Beatles Gibson J-160E) and I hooked up my strap to the headstock just like The Beatles did. Well, I noticed something instantly -- I was getting fret buzz. The weight of the guitar hanging from the headstock was actually bending the neck.

It's surprising how little a change can cause buzz sometimes.

I think folks do the SG Headstock strap thingy to stop neck-dive. But a leather strap with a raw interior and not wearing silk shirts is likely enough.

Every picture of Wes Montgomery has a strap around the head of his L5.
