Hey everyone. I just got a ne Epi SG special P-90 and its a REALLY nice guitar especially for the price! I love the tone and playability but there’s one issue. A buzzing hum seems to build up in the class A single ended amp I have after a bit of playing. Not so much with the double ended amp I have. I relate it to the SG because it’s never happened with my other guitar. I’m wondering if it may be a grounding problem with the guitar and if anyone else on here might have the 2020 Sg special with p-90s and had similar issues. I’m probably going to open her up and take a look but wanted any feedback I could get beforehand. Thanx!

A hum that builds over time is symptomatic of a temperature related problem in the amp. The guitar itself is unlikely to change this way.

First time with P90 ? Your position relative to the amp make a difference on hum. I'm with donepearce on this, if it builds up without you moving = amp.

Yup. Never had p-90s before. And yeah it changes with relative position. Thanx!

That's the thing about P90s - they aren't humbuckers, so they hum. You have to walk around and rotate to find a quiet spot.

Well ok I DOhave experience with fender type single coils. They don’t change their hum and not with my amp. These particular P-90s ARE a bit microphonic(at least one is) but I love their tone.

As long as I keep playing it’s fine. Plus there’s a couple volume knobs. Still probably open it up and take a look around. Make sure there’s no gremlins.

I feel a bit silly. Bit of egg on my face. I found the problem...Pedals. Hum Doesn’t happen going straight into the amp sanspedals(that should be a new amp company!) but I am happy it’s not the amp. I built it and was starting to worry so of course I began by blaming the guitar! ;-)

It did turn out to be the amp. The NFB switch I installed was grounded at two points by mistake. Don’t know how I missed that but it cleared up the hum once I fixed it. Sounds great now. Love this Chinese made SG!
