Hi folks. I'm curious about this. The new 3rd generation 4i4 says that it requires a minimum of 900mA, but the MacBook USB supposedly offers up to 500mA. Any opinions? Users? Here's the link: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360003921499-Scarlett-4i4-3rd-Gen-power-requirements Thanks,
Which MacBook? The new ones with Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C are themselves powered via a USB connection ... Apple quote 100W in and up to 15W supplied to “downstream” bus-powered devices. At the standard 5V USB voltage that’d be 3A which I would expect to be more than enough!! https://www.apple.com/uk/thunderbolt/
One of these? https://support.apple.com/kb/sp649?locale=en_GB It has an older style Thunderbolt port (as well as USB 3) but even that has a maximum of 550mA so you might be outta luck. Might be able to find a powered USB hub that will work? But some devices are funny about hubs so not 100% sure on that.
Hmmm ... check the USB Specifications section on this Apple support page: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201163 If your MacBook is the same spec as the one I linked in my previous post, it has USB 3 at up to 5Gbps - which is USB 3.1 Gen 1 according to this link and DOES support up to 900mA.
