Hi Gang! I hope you are all well.

A couple weeks ago, some kid on Facebook asked what guitar he should get to play Metal on. A lot of people were giving him different suggestions but I said that a good guitarist can play any style on any guitar. Someone called me out on it by asking if I could play Metal on a Fender Acoustic. This was my response. What do you think?

    Haha! That was badass man!

I think most of those people commenting on youtube are teenagers who've just discovered cussing. I can't read those comments.

    Well done man!

Edit: Oops, I just realized you were talking about FB! I stand by my comment though. Again that was awesome! I was cracking up!!!

    YES!!!

Complete with pinch harmonics, double hammer-ons, pick slides, and lots o' chugging!

I wonder if you could put a Floyd Rose on that?

Besides, don't metal power ballads begin with acoustic guitar?

It's the style that counts, not the timbre. Good for you!

Watched one of my kids do AC/DC on a Uke, so I'm sure Kevy could do metal on a banjo.

Check out Hayseed Dixie. They're an AC/DC cover hillbilly jug band.

Love the Hayseed Dixie examples. They were the first ones I thought of when starting to read this thread.

Although it may not be "Metal" my Acoustic partner and I did many "Heavy Rock", "Rock", and so on acoustically, in coffee houses, with energy... and it worked... for the most part. I found that the tunes that had a solid music foundation can be done on anything. Tunes that are simply noise and power don't seem to stand up no matter on what you play them. Another example may be the "Unplugged" series.........

Excellent Kevy! I bet they weren't expecting that hit of distortion, I know I wasn't, I was expecting a metal song played expressively on an acoustic because...

Although distortion is the primary feature of a metal song, distortion does not make a song 'metal'. There is so much more going on that I think a metal song played with energy and vibe will translate no matter what instrument you are playing on.

That's not saying I'd like "acoustic metal", I'm addicted to distortion myself :dude:

    Oh.

I bet you're correct, considering the context of this thread. Shows where I'm coming from.

I love stuff where they mix the sound of an acoustic guitar, and then hit you with a wall of lovely distorted rock goodness.

I was definitely referring to "Panama" by Van Halen. VH, by the way, has quite a few songs that are played on acoustic or at least start on acoustic before getting very loud and distorted. They're just not the ones you usually hear on the radio, except "Ice Cream Man."
