Other than the pickguard and a slight difference in the body contour, I can't see much difference between the two, especially to justify the ~$300 price difference. What am I missing????

The neck joint and construction are completely different. Look at the backs of ths guitars where the neck joins the body.

The neck itself is a different shape, too.

The 61RI also has Classic57 pickups, where the Std has 490/498's.

By the way.....

I don't like the 61RI. All of those differences are things I like on the Standard over the 61RI. Theyre not necessarily better...just different. But some people love that model.

The 61 has two 57 classic pickups. the standard has the 490/498 pickups.
the neck on the 61 is slimmer and the body to me felt a lighter than the standard it could be slimmer too but im not to sure.
One of the two has a longer neck tenon I have no idea which one does because when i spoke with a store rep on the phone he told me one of them had a longer neck tenon which would make it stronger and then when i posted about it here i was told the other one had the longer neck tenon. sorry i cant help you out with this, it probaly just confused you even more.
I was deciding between the two a few weeks ago and i know many other members on here have went through the saem deciscion. I went with the standard and Im very very happy with it.
When it came down to deciding I just picked the one i liked better. I liked the beefier neck, and was very satisfied with the sound of the 498 and the overall feel so i chose the one i liked better. Thats really how it should go.
if you dont like the tone of the 490/498 combo you could get the 57's sell the old pups and then it will sound like a 61 and your wallet will be fatter than if you just bought the 61 itself.

Really, it all comes down to which one you have the money for, because I think they're very alike.

I own both. I used to totally prefer the RI, but now I really enjoy having the two. They compliment each other very nicely.

I'm pretty sure the '61 RI has a longer tenon, because the neck joins the body at the 22 fret, I think. It would HAVE to have a longer tenon for stability, not increaesed, just normal. My Standard joins at the 19th. That being said the Standard has a decent sized tenon that extends into the neck pup route and is sealed w/finish- it's not going anywhere. I always wondered why the '61 RI had the neck joint so far down the neck.

on the '61 RI the sides are cut a bit differently, the neck joins the body at a different place. and the RI has '57 classics, the standard has a 490R and a 498T. personally id get the standard and then upgrade the p-ups. :coolsmiley:
