Just the Eleanor Rigby, and you have quintessential Dorian mode.

    Hi AngusMadeMeDoIt,

    Welcome to theory world.

First, what does the melody of the song dictate? Does it use F's or F#'s?
That would tell you what to you, rather than just wanting to do so arbitrarily.

Otherwise do you hear a melody in your head to play, if so does it use F or F#?

Sometimes both are used, the b6 and the natural 6th scale degrees.

"Just the Eleanor Rigby, and you have quintessential Dorian mode"

Actually this shifts between both C and C# as the 6th scale degrees in Em, the line "picks up the rice in the church" being in Dorian with a C#, but the next line, "lives in a dream" uses C naturals as does the chorus itself, C chord "Ah look at all the lonely Em chord people.

Good example of both in the same song.

"Scarborough Fair" is in Dorian, as is Santana's "Oye Como Va".

The reason why the F# minor pentatonic and the A major pentatonic look the same is because they are relative keys

Play the notes of the Gmajor scale but start on the A note. The f# note is what gives you the Dorian sound.

Why don't you just ask him? Dorian is on the forum. Maybe he can tell you what his mode is.

It'll work better on "Khusen Kalle Mazel Tov", but go ahead and try.

Mustang Sally gets it because I hate the song and just want to piss off the person who made me play it. :naughty:
