After owning 4 SG's in my life and selling them all, I once again have a hankering to own one. Of the 4, 2 had ebony fingerboards...A '73 Standard and one of those tomato soup "Platinum" Guitar Center specials. That was actually my favorite SG of all but it developed a bad neck crack so Gibson replaced it with 2008 (I think) Standard. The other one I owned was a '61 reissue. The '61 reissue and '08 Standard had rosewood fingerboards and I never really was in love with either of those guitars. Also the '61 reissue had a thin neck and I like a thicker (medium to "baseball bat") neck. The only reason I sold the '73 (my first) was the narrow nut width - that bugged me. What I'm finding is ebony fingerboards seem quite hard to find. Are there certain years or models I can look for that had ebony so I can make my search a bit easier? Not an absolute "must" but definitely prefer the feel. 2nd question- Pickups: All of these SG's I owned were stock. Once again, to me the '73 and the Platinum had more crunch and grit, the other 2 just seemed a bit more feeble in the pup dept. I don't know based on this info if anyone could point me to years/models with what I might gravitate towards? I see what seems like a million Standards with rosewood fingerboards, I'd still consider a new '61 but the neck size worries me. One last point...I've pondered the P90's but I'm so used to humbuckers in an SG I don't know if I could switch (plus my main guitar now is a Ritchie Kotzen Tele and even with one humbucker in the bridge I can get all kinds of single coil sounds out of it). Anyhow sorry for the long post just looking for some possible search pointers!
