Elitist or not?

I just found this on eBay:

The headstock looks like an Elitist's for me, but the TRC is supposed to be 2-screwed, isn't it? The binding and the inlays also tell me that it's not an old G-400, because as far as I'm concerned, the early bound fingerboards were fitted with dot inlays...any opinions or tips?

so this guy is selling a valuable and collectible guitar without knowing it...in an Elitist gig bag no less.

what makes it an elitist? (other than what doesn't make it a run of the mill epi)

that open book headstock was only made a very small number of years, i'm guessing it's modified or otherwise switched out.

I think that the 'japan/asian market' epis, had the 'open book' style top.

There's something fishy about that headstock shape as well as the TRC.

The real Elitists ought to have the crown inlay on the headstock as well.

weird guitar, headstock says its an early korean epiphone, late 80s / early 90s.
but neck says its not, as back then they only had dot inlays without binding.

possibly had inlays and binding added on later?

It's a 1989 model. For 1989 (and possibly 1990 too but I have no proof), the LP and G-400 had the open-book headstock (slightly altered). I have the 1989 Epiphone Catalog to prove it but I don't feel like finding the scans I took, lol.

I just realized it has a bound neck and trapezoid inlays, which the 1989 G-400 didn't have, but the HS is undoubtedly that same one. I would guess he had the neck bound and the inlays added. It's definitely not an Elitist, that much I can say for sure.

right, one model year for open book headstock... but you're assuming the guitar in question is an 89/90 when in actuality that is only a scant possibility based on what we are seeing. we don't know what year it is, nor do we know the model. fact.

^^^this of course is based on *my* assumption the guitar is modified or some rare special edition, model anomaly, etc.

If its a Japanese Epi then it's probably a bargain.

if its korean, which it most likely is, doubt u would get any serial number from the seller as back then it was just a sticker behind the headstock...unless of cos that sticker is still intact.

Got the serial: 9060023. The database says it's a Korean babe from 06/1989. I already have a Chinese G400 from 2005, so that makes me wonder if it is worth to swap mine for this. Nevertheless, I'll wait til the end of the auction, and see what happens. Thanks for the help!

Well...one of the most annoying things just happened. Auction ends at 17:15, I work until 17:00. I run upstairs to the computers to bid after my shift, and the owner is up there too, having some problems with his PC, and asks me to help him out. It took about 3 minutes, and by the time the other PC switched on, the auction ended, and the guitar went on start price... :oops:

No worry, it was nothing special. As I said, an '89 Korean made. They show up every once in a while for around that price.
