I've read several SG enthusiast comment that they might choose to save money buying a used Gibson instead of a new Epiphone. In my experience "price shopping SG's", many dealers and private individuals seem to feel their old Gibson is worth more than a new one. Personally I don't place a whole lotta value on someone's old beat up weather checked modded reject. But that's not what the market place say's. What say you?

Do we really know for a fact that this is veneer? Photos can sometimes be misleading.

When looking for a used guitar, if wear looks like it honestly came from the instrument being played, I tell myself, this must be a good one if it has been played that much.
We do know for a fact.
What else do you think it could be ? Papagayo's fantasy photoflame ?

I'm still waiting for Epiphone to do some amazing stuff with their basses. I've been wanting an affordable new EB0. Epiphone had one but it was a little too "affordable" for me. Something of much higher quality than the old one in the $500-$600 range would do nicely.

Unless it's mindlessly mistreated that is most likely the case. The reasons why people chose to buy a certain type of guitar at a certain price point varies vary so greatly, and are so personal, that any "discussion" on the subject will only insult some and anger others. I find things like that best discussed IRL and with friends...

If, like me, one feels that emojis and smileys or whatever they're called are for women and children then one runs the risk of coming across as rather harsh at times in writing and especially with people you don't know. I mean, you yourself called people who buy vintage guitars purchasers of "someone's old beat up weather checked modded reject". At he pub we'd just have a laugh about that and argue on, here we take offence. I just pretend I'm at the pub...

Wouldn't that just be a Gibson for $850-1k?

Or even better get a Japanese off reverb. For the 5-750 there are what I have been told are Gibson custom shop level used Japanese LPs and SGs. I wouldn't think basses to be any different.

In YT videos I have seen complaints of how lame and obvious it is because the finish is clearly different on the beveled edges.

I actually think that this is not something they thought they'd get away with but an actual design decision. A bad one, but still.

I sent an e-mail to Musicians Friend asking them about the type of wood and whether there was veneer on the Epiphone SG Standard 61' Maestro. Their reply was " The body and neck are solid mahogany. The finish is nitrocellulose lacquer. " There was no specific response to the veneer issue.

Epiphone uses nitrocellulose lacquer? I’d be shocked if this turned out to be true! :wow:Also, sure looks like veneers top and bottom on the product page.

Probably good to know for anyone that ever thought of buying a guitar there but perhaps even better for anyone wanting to work there. No previous knowledge or experience required.

I want a full thickness veneer, it prevents neck dive.
