I just ordered a set of JJ/Tesla 6L6GCs to replace the stock GTs. I was also thinking of swapping out the speaker, either with a Celestion Vintage 30 or a Weber Blue Dog AlNiCo 12.

Any suggestions?

Celestion Vintage 30 is a good speaker. You might want to try the Celestion V12-60 (silver series 12, 60watt). It actually has slighly better bottom than the Vintage 30, just a bit less middy. The Vintage 30 has a bit more of a mids peak, and a slightly weaker bottom. Its a subtle difference... they sound quite similar. The real difference is the price - the Silver Series V12-60 being half the cost (or so)

Thanks for the info. I'm primarily playing an SG Classic (P-90s) through it, so there are plenty of mids as there is. It's a very "dark" sounding guitar. I'll have a look.

I put the JJ's in tonight. Wow, what a difference! I didn't have time to do a re-bias; I just plugged 'em in. The are so much brighter sounding than the stock GT's. At my original "bright" settings, my SG sounded like a Telecaster! Weird. I didn't think the tubes would make that much of a difference. I figured it would be a speaker issue.

In any case, I'm now looking at a Tone Tubby hemp-cone replacement speaker. I haven't decided yet whether or not to go with ceramic or AlNiCo. My wallet says the former; my ears say the latter...
