In July of 2013 I picked up a 2013 LP R9 VOS. Instant bonding and the love affair started. In April 2014 I sold a PRS. On a nostalgic whim, I ordered the 2013 SG VOS, ten minutes after the PRS PayPal cleared. I had only once before played an SG for about 15 minutes in 1974. Nothing about the SG felt right, but for the sound. It was a bit neck heavy and a bit sticky. The neck felt too long and reeked havoc on my muscle memory. For some unexplained reason I decided that I would not let the guitar beat me. So, I left the guitar out of the case to let the nitro cure. I polished the neck. I got a new leather strap with a roughed up underside. I positioned the guitar closer to my hip rather than more centered. Most importantly I just kept playing it. Throw in a little guitar specific EQ tweak on the Marshall and I am declaring total victory over the SG. Now the great sound is matched with great playability.
Beautifull guitars.Vintage sunburst Lester and Cherry red half bat pickguard SG.dont get no better.those two side cushions on ur couch need decorated to .
A new guitar always takes adjustment. "All you need is just a little patience" Glad to hear you're getting along with it. My VOS is by far the most comfortable guitar I've ever played. I'll never let her go.
My 2006 classic had hardly been played when i got it and its great and sounds great but it has to develope character.get wore in if you will.youll wear yours in Tiboy
People say they are too neck heavy, neck is too long... Bullshit! I say you need to get used to differences. Everyone wants to compare an SG to an LP... If you are used to playing an LP all the time, it doesn't guarantee you will be able to comfortably play an SG straight away. It's something you gotta get used to! They are completely different to each other, and require some intimate "me" time to get used to. Kind of like when you start dating another partner after a breakup. You got to get used to the new partner, as they are probably nothing like the old one. Anyway, enough of that. Congrats that you have beaten your SG!
I liked the comment about putting the guitar close to your hip instead of centered. Maybe it's because I'm not very tall, maybe it's because I started out with SGs, but that's how I hang all my guitars. Puts the neck right where I want it and I find the controls fall to hand better. Enjoy your SG, it is one of the few timeless and great electric guitars. You just have to get it. P.
I have a 2012 vos and it's my favourite axe to grind. It's a funny thing that I've acquired many guitars but the more I play the VOS, the more I feel like selling the other guitars. It just works so well for me. Hope you have as much fun with yours.
I love both of your Gibsons. Derek Trucks is a good example of placing an SG at the hip. It works so well, he does it with all of his guitars!
Your R9 looks a lot like the R8 I sold last week. I didn't persist with my VOS (Les Paul) because I found an instant fit with an SG. Know what you mean about the neck seeming long. I too regularly mis-position my left hand. Never used the Mixolydian mode so much in my life....
