Hey everyone. Im planning on buying a Epiphone G400 as a back up to my Gibson LP Studio and plan to install a P94 in the neck and a 498T in the bridge.

Im just looking for peoples suggestions on what else I should upgrade on it, if anything?

Cheers,

Ste.

I'm not certain a single/hum combo would sound so good...

Which demonstrates your lack of experience and knowledge, Everymn

ste_blue,

I've run an SD Phat Cat in the neck and a SD '59 bridge on an Epi Elitist, and it sounded simply great. A P94 or other type of single coil would most certainly give you better articulation out of that neck position.

You might also want to try the SD Phat Cat there as well. The combination of the SD's Alnico II magnet in the neck with the Alnico V in the bridge pup is a very sweet combination.

ste_blue,
Another upgrade that will benefit the G-400 is the electronics . If ya want to spend the bucks,
a RS Guitar Works upgrade kit is the way to go.
Or you can pick up 4 CTS Pots, Switchcraft Switch and Jack and caps of your choice.
Bettere tuners will also be a step in the right direction O0

Thanks for the replies.

brucewayne131, i can get a g400 with grover tuners already installed so that would solve that problem.
I like in the UK, so does anyone know of any sites where i can pick up new pots, switch and jack etc?

I was planning on getting another gibson but finances dont allow it.

If you mean the stock Grover-look tuners, then no, those aren't actually made by Grover.

I think he means the Grover tuners that say "Grover" on them.
Like the ones that came stock on my G400.

Cheers guys.

I think ill go for the P94, 498T, new switch and jack for the moment and see how that turns out. Then just upgrade different parts as time goes on.

Should be getting it next month so Ill put up some pics etc once everything has been installed.

You should do the pots and caps when you do the pickups...to get the pickups' full tonal goodness. They're not expensive, and do make a difference in clarity and tonal range.

Consider installing a non-plastic nut as well... ;)

+1

I just took my SG in to do that very thing with the electrical system.

The newer Epi's seem to have the tuning peg problem fixed now, they're installing Grovers on 'em which is good.

I'd vote going with a BustBucker 3 in the bridge position and a P90 neck (a'la the LP BFG) that could sound quite interesting in a mahogany body. If I get the G-400 I'm looking at I haven't decided yet if I'm going with double 57' Humbuckers or a BustBucker Pro in the bridge and a P94R in the neck.

Cheers!
