G'day all you SG fanatics out there. I'm a long time owner of an SG and I just love this guitar. Bought it from a newspaper ad about 1995 and its in perfect nick. I use it in my current band The Regulars, here in Brisbane, Australia. I was trying to date my SG and think I have narrowed it down. It is an SG Deluxe so that puts it at about 1970 - 1972. But the pickups are not stamped and the pick guard is a chrome plate, So i'm thinking it could be a 1971. It has a few inconsistencies like the Chrome plate, german made machine heads, and fine tuning knobs so I think it has been doctored. The problem is that i cant find any serial number on the headstock which makes me a bit worried... However it looks legit and plays like an original SG. If anyone can help me date it or can give me any further info, I'd be much appreciated. See photos.
    Cheers
    Drew

    Welcome.
    Maybe check the pot codes.
If original pots, that would indicate the earliest year the guitar was made.

Many thanks CG. Have you seen an early SG with the chrome scratchplate before?

Gibson actually dumped the Klusons in favor of Shallers in this time frame, so that's legit. Relax, enjoy your guitar.

I have only seen the Deluxe with either no guard or the LP style guard.
Never seen a chrome guard on early SG that was stock.

The ebony and chrome looks great.

Agreed. I like it better than the doofy one Norlin stuck on it.

Cheers Didds. Not sure Kiko. Thats how I bought it and the seller couldnt give me much info on it. I am thinking that it may have been refurnished, new paint, chrome scratchplate - hence no serial number on the back of the headstock. But I also know they issue a few models without S/Ns so I am really in the dark on this. Thanks for the info Raiyn. That has solved one of the mysteries! Thanks all for the help.
