Looking at a Gibson Historic LP/SG '62 reissue from 2000. Owner is asking $2900.

Cherry, Maestro, all tags and COA, 57 Classics, and Murphy aged.

Is $2900 a little high?

I don't think so. From what I have seen that seems a fair price for a Murphy Aged CS guitar.

I'm not basing this on the value of a Murphy aged guitar - who does great work and which I know adds value - just someone who has recently been SG shopping. I think that price is very high. You're basically paying $1200 for the 'aging'. You can get a mint Derek Trucks model for $1000 less or a '61 reissue for even less.

You could go for the production version of the '61 Les Paul Reissue with the Maestro, and save half that. A couple of guys here got them when they came out a few years ago. I got the version with the sideways tremolo. Both versions were about $1265.00 street cost at the time. They have been climbing in value since they are no longer offered by Gibson. That could be another option for you.

True, but you are paying for the difference between a Custom Shop guitar and a Gibson USA guitar. Add in the aging and that price is right on the mark.

I don't think Murphy did many SG guitars $2900.00 that's asking price try $2500.00
I would play it first if it rocks your world go for it.

I definitely stand corrected. After some googling, that does look to be an 'in the ballpark' price - and a beautiful guitar. I made the mistake of answering as if I was spending my own money ;)

So very much this. Paying more doesn't make it a better guitar, and sometimes the best sounding and playing guitar in the shop, for you, winds up being a $600 SG Special. If there's no magic don't buy it.

I agree with ScottMarlowe. Play it and if there's magic you won't think about the price anymore. It's a good looking guitar and Vibrola is special.

Regular (non CS) Standard '61 reissue are a good option as well. I have one without the vibrola and it rocks (same pickups by the way).

I'm not so sure about the selling having a COA. Mine didn't come with one (I have the the stop bar model). A number of years later when I looked into it, everything I saw online said these SG's didn't come with one. A call to Gibson confirmed it. I believe the 2003 Gary Rossington Custom Shop Tom Murphy Aged SG did come with the COA.

The 2000 model also came with the standard 90's Gibson USA case, brown exterior with the pink interior and shroud. Not the black Gibson Custom Shop case that came with the Custom Shop Les Paul's made around that time.
