I have a 2014 Standard '61 that has become my #1, I absolutely love it, but it's so damn light! Makes playing standing a little difficult. What's the heaviest SG you've ever played/owned? (model/year)
My 08 Classic, with a Maestro lyre weighs 8 lb.s. My 03 Faded Specials weigh 6 lb. 10 oz./ea. I prefer the lighter ones for standing.
My 2013 '60s Tribute is 8.5+ pounds (weighed myself on my bathroom scale, then weighed myself holding the guitar, and I'm old and didn't want to want to fall over on top my new guitar trying to squat down and get a more precise reading). Bought it on Reverb and was pretty shocked the first time I lifted it out of the case. It weighs a little more than my last (non weight relieved) Les Paul. More than a pound heavier than my alder Strat. I put a pickguard on it. Drilled the holes with a little pin vise and it's the hardest, most dense mahogany I've ever drilled in to. I had a boat anchor Norlin LP once upon a time and this 'hog is denser than that. With my slipperiest strap it neck dives, so apparently the neck is just as dense as the body. (Balances ok with my suede straps.) Tone is thick and full, but clear, punchy, and defined. Amazing dynamics. I've had very heavy guitars and very light guitars and I haven't heard much correlation between tone and weight, but this sort of matches the stereotype of what heavy are claimed to sound like.
I own a '81 SG Deluxe that is almost exactly 9 lbs. It's probably the heaviest one I have ever played, and it's also pretty much the biggest-sounding one too (which is why I bought it). My 2017 SG Standard is only about 6-1/2 lbs.
Gball, How apropos LOL (SP) With your avatar, and my brain even before the BS Matters,,,,,,,, I was gonna say Iommi's SG's. Cuz Sabbath gave us all that heavy stuff.
