Hi All,
I have a meeting next week (Tuesday) with a guy who wants to sell his '65 SG Standard in France. He said it is an early '65 with the wide neck (63-64 specs).
The serial number is #269xxx corresponding to a '65.
I have just a few pictures but I would like to receive your first comments about this guitar based on those pics.
It looks original to me but I have a doubt about the neck joint. The guy said it had a neck reset a long time ago. To the best of my knowledge, the neck joint should have a "half-circle" shape and it does not look like on the picture.
What do you think?
Thanks and cheers from Paris!
Antoine

She is a beauty! The serial number prefix checks out for 65 according to Blue Book, But I would like to see some other input on the lower bridge. It is different then my 65 Sp and much the same as my 73 Custom. With the serial number good then is it a bridge change then......... or was that the original bridge type? In the pic, it even looks brighter. Just my thought.........

Thanks a lot ;)
I don't have any additional pic of the bridge but the seller sent me the new following ones.
Looks like electronics have been touched (non original solders). I also have a doubt about the nut. Last but not least, the guitar shines a lot. No whether checking at all. Is the finish original? The guy says it is.

Thanks again for your help!
Antoine

As you find out what may or may not be original, it will help you to know and to judge the asking price compared to the "state of original" that might be claimed.........?

From Provide.net,

"1963 SG Std specs:
"Patent Number" humbucking pickups, Maestro vibrato with lyre and logo on coverplate (but occassionally the sideways vibrato is still seen on a few 1963 Gibson SG Standard models). "Les Paul" is now removed from the truss rod cover and model officially known as the "SG Standard", neck shape get slightly larger. Neck tenon size is increased, so the necks on 1963 and later SGs are more stable. 1963 to 1964 SG Standards (without the sideways vibrato, and slightly larger, more stable necks) are the best of the SG Standards.

1965 SG Std specs:
Chrome parts instead of nickel, pickguard now surrounds the pickups thus eliminating the need for separate pickup surrounds. Peghead angle changes from 17 degrees to 14 degrees, nut width narrows from 1 11/16" to 1 9/16" or 1 5/8". 1965 models can have any one or all of those changes (they didn't happen all at once during 1965).
