Hello, I'm a new member here and I'm thinking about buying a Gibson SG-X. It is used and in fairly good condition. Because this is a discontinued model I don't really know alot about it. It has a Seymour Duncun Humbucker in it. (I don't know if that was stock or not I am just stating that) It is in full working condition and sounds really well. It even has an affordable price: $319.98. Here's the catch: The original owner stripped the finish and painted in Flat-Grey/Black.

I wanted to know if it is worth the $319.98 and if anyone knew how much it would cost to refinish it. Thank you for any and all answers.

I have a '98 SG-X in ebony. The Duncan pickup is not stock, they came with the 500T. I hated that pickup so I'm sure what ever is in there is an upgrade. Alot of people put JBs in them. If you take the pickup out and look at the bottom there should be a three letter code. That will tell you what it is. If you look at it and repost I can tell you what it is. The refinishing is not a big deal to me- unless it is hiding a headstock break or something. If you don't like the finish, I would just strip it and go with an oil finish. $319 is not a bad price at all. It might not be worth having a pro finish it...it's really up to you though. I got mine with a a bit of playing wear for about $350. I sold the 500T off to some sod, and bought a DD for about the same price. I put a black/cream/black pichguard on it...with the zebra DD it looks killer now. The cream matches the side-markers exactly! I feel like I got a good deal. These are really great guitars, stripped down and meant to grind. If there are no previous breaks I would buy it- but hold him at that price.

Well. I can't get to the guitar for another few days, so i found a picture of the humbucker on the internet. This looks exactly like the one that was in the SG-X. Sorry that there's two humbuckers, but they're both the same.

and if you could give me an opinion that would be great. I have a 2003 Fender Stratocaster MEXI. It is completely stock. Which guitar do you think is better, because to buy the SG-X I'll have to sell or trade my Fender. Thanks so much for the help with pricing.

Thanks, I'm glad to be a part of such a nice guitar community. I really want to get the SG-X but i don't know.

If you had to choose between a Fender Strat-MEXI and a '98 SG-X what would you choose??

There is no way to tell what model Duncan that is unless you take it out. They make several models that look like that. I would CERTAINLY go for the SG if the choice is between the two. The SG-X is like a Special with only one pickup. You will get mahogany body/mahogany neck, good electronics, and a nitro finish (if it wasn't refinished that is).

I'd dump the strat in a heartbeat and get the SG-X. Flat black is nice -- looks good dirty too!

Samash is holding it behind the counter and i'm going to pick it up tomorrow after noon. It turns out that the music store right down the street from me does refinishes. I'm going to get it redone in a midnight blue type color, sort of like the the blue that most of the SG deluxes were painted. I'm so excited to get my first SG!

When I get it tomorrow I will show some before photos and when I get the refinish I'll show some after. With the finish that's on it right now you can't see the wood grain, so you'll have to wait for those shots.

Finally got her home and she's banging! Sounds Wonderful on my little 25w crate practice amp so the possiblities are endless with a good amp! Here is a picture of her before the refinish. Hopefully i'll have some photos of it later during the week after the shop repaints it. Enjoy!

Well now I know I will need to replace the pot on the volume knob. It is either 10 or 0 there is no in between. This is really annoying because i need to fool with my amp to get the desired volume level. Luckily, the local shop said they will replace it for free when they refinish it on Tuesday.

It is an o.k. color but the finish isnt that great it has many flaws and tape lines. I would just rather have it professionally done and make it a high gloss color. I thikn it will look very nice when its done. I'll keep you updated on any improvments!
