Hi folks.

Came across this forum while looking for options for reconstructing my '74 SG Standard. Long story short: this was my first guitar, purchased in 1983. I was originally told it was a '67, but dating these things in those days was, as you probably know, virtually impossible. Serial# points to '70 - '73, depending on the source, but the pots are clearly stamped 12th week of '74, so I'll go with that.

I've never been a "leave it stock" person and over the years, I've had a number of different pickups and wiring schemes in it. I also stripped and refinished it (originally cherry, horribly faded from sunlight, now natural). Somewhere along the line, I painted the pickguard and it has since disappeared.

I also have a '60 Supro Belmont, a 2003 Ibanez AG75, and a FrankenPaul that currently consists of a Cortez neck and a Lincoln body. All except the AG75 are works-in-progress.

I haven't played the SG in over two years because the last, and hopefully final modding, was interrupted by a number of things. I'm currently building a wooden cover plate/pickguard/backplate and wiring it up again. All of the previous mods and regular use made it necessary to remove the front side of the control rout and cover it back up. I always wanted more room in there anyway. Things are in motion and I thought I'd introduce myself before posting pics of the progress.

This is pretty close to where I'm at although this was taken a few years ago. Not a great shot.

Welcome! Cover the cavity with plexi-glass so you can see the works similar to some wrist watch designs!

I like that idea, but the new cover will be constructed with 1/8" white birch plywood, dyed black with a black poplar burl veneer dyed trans black. We'll see how that works out. I've never done a veneer before but as you can probably tell, I'm not afraid of trying things. Electrically, it will have one volume knob and a coil-splitting switch in addition to the jack and pickup selector. The pickups will be one Kent Armstrong PAF and one StewMac PAF mounted to the cover plate rather than rings.

Here's a better shot of the grain pattern on the front. The cover in this shot is a walnut one I made a few years ago. That cover all but shattered in the hole-drilling process and the grain wasn't aligned quite right and would have bugged the crap out of me anyway. I made a walnut plate/pickuop mount for the Supro that turned out really nice.
