    Very nice. O0 Isn't that a Lead 12?

When you said it's a mini Plexi, I wondered if it was
    - a tube amp
    - designed/voiced somewhat like a Plexi

If it's a solid state (but they can sound fantastic! I've had several.) Lead 12 then I'd say it favors the JCM800.

Hard to answer without knowing how much your willing to spend.

Epiphone tube amps may be a good option. They can really use a few electronic mods and new tubes, but after that, hook em up to a nice speaker cab and they say they sound great! Starting at $99usa on a new 5watt head with nothing but an on/off switch and volume control.

    alexrules43 Windsor suggestion
A brand new Peavey Windser costs 400 and is designed after the Marshall Super Lead 1959.

I tried out 2 Epi amps and thought they sucked.......imho

First one buzzed like crazy and switched amps and the second
one just sounded real lame. I don't see the appeal.

(guess i'm just a bit spoiled now.......)

Ditto That Veeeek.........Plugged in and waited.....and waited.......Oh Well.....Think that for fooling around at home (when NOT plugged into the Matamp) the Vox ADVT still does it best for my purposes.

    Oh hell yeah, Lexie!

It seems in this case, just because it has tubes in it,
doesn't mean it's gonna sound good.

I'd take any Vox ADVT over any Epi on any day....

    Vic, (and Lex)
That's cool. The initial appeal for the Epi VJ 5watt amp is more for amp modders/builders, and those who want a really cheap tube amp. Unfortunately, it needs a few mods to make it sound good.

I tried them at the local GC and wasn't impressed at all,,, except for the price. They have bad sounding tubes and need some parts replaced. But then I read up on these here and at 18watt forum and found a large interest in modding them to sound really good.

Also, starting at just 5watts tube power, it's a great home/apartment/practice amp, so there really is some appeal for it "if" you are willing to have it modded. Hooked up to a 4x12 and it can rattle the windows!

Vox has a great line of small hybrid tube amps too!

Well, have you heard a modded Epi amp, 1way?

So, even tho a few folks have screwed with them,
you have no idea how they sound once modded.

Most folks that want a decent amp could do alot better
right off the jump with a VOX.

OK...so we are talking considerably MORE Money....But The Zvex Nano Head took some beating. Had one for quite a while and as a Recording Tool it was truely Ridiculous. Did EXACTLY what was expected of it.....and when run through a 4x12!!!!!!!!!!!! Blimey!!!!!!

    Just ask Brew!!!!!! ;D

But for sheer convenience.....Nah....Vox all the way.

I have read (and offered some questions) within many pages of posts describing these mods (and their claimed sonic results) which I use as a "guide", not as a mandate for what I must believe or purchase. It's information that can be helpful if you process it carefully/wisely. This entire forum is about musicians who "discuss" "share" "illustrate" "compare" "analyze" information about gear. If it's not good to learn from others about gear that you don't already have first hand experience with, then maybe I'm way off base here. ;) But from my perspective, the exact benefit of this sort of open dialogue is that people learn about things that they otherwise do not have sufficient info on.

I agree that the cheapest (nearly disposable) tube amp in current mass production sounds bad in stock form.

    Lexie
I don't think some resistors and caps costs that much more. Spunky and others are much more keen on specifics. But it does take time to research, buy parts and install them. So it's not for everyone. If you can afford a more expensive and better sounding amp, and you have no desire to work on a 5watt amp, then as vik108 said, "I do not see the appeal" either. ;)

    Could you possibly explain?
