dell occasionally puts their entry level laptops on sale for that. Not blazing fast by any means but a working computer for not alot of money. I'm using a dell laptop right now on the couch and have been very happy with mine.

Used laptops are usually pretty cheap. Check craigslist or kijiji, although some might be stolen (I saw an almost new macbook pro selling for 400$ when it sells new for 2500$)

Also try asking someone at a software/IT company or another company that replaces computers relatively often if they could sell you an old one when they get rid of some.

normaly I would stay away from a $500 laptop unless you want to run Linux at that price its going to have a slow processor slow video and hardly any memory or hard drive space. 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 Dimm
    120GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+R write capability, Cyberlink Power DVD

whoa! i had a desktop that i put an amd in it and it ran pretty well. i wouldnt be opposed to a non-intel processed machine

man that is an amazing price

prob the thing that bothers me the most on that laptop is that you need a wireless card vs. a built in one but that is a minor thing. hard drive rpm maybe but heck if i were looking right now id be on that one

    great find
