I remember when TASCAM came out with the 4-track cassette recorder.
It was nothing short of a revelation! I'd spend HOURS with this thing...
OK, it wasn't the best quality but you could get your ideas down quick!

Sometimes, I'd get home from work on Friday night and wouldn't come
out of the home studio until Sunday afternoon...

Controls set up like an old reel to reel! If you flipped the tape over, you'd
have instant reverse guitar licks too! I think that unit is still in my attic...

With the advent of digital recording, things aren't so easy.
I have a Boss BR-8 and it just isn't fun to record with.

I've tried PC recording but I really miss the meters, knobs, and sliders
and hate sitting in front of the PC screen for hours on end...

What do you use to record with that might do the trick for me?

Sure, I'd LOVE the Roland VS-2480DVD 24-Track but it's beyond my budget...

I am looking at the newer Boss units and the Korg D1200mkII 12-Track
and others but I am open to any and all suggestions....

.......... I still use my Tascam Porta Studio 2 once in a while. It isn't as great as what may be available, but it has two things going for it. It works and it's paid for.............! ;D

Use to record for it to a cassette recorder, but have found going into the puter allows me to run masters that I couldn't before........................ Now all I have to do is find the time to use the stuff...............!

PC user myself, employing Cubase SE for recording, and a number of plug-ins for effects and virtual instruments (I have a real thing for Mellotrons, Hammond Organs Pianos and old-school analog keyboards especially), For mastering, I'm using Magix Audio Cleaning Lab (for $40 this thing is AMAZING, it'll clean up tape and vynil as well quite beautifully).

But for what you described, you might want to look into some of these new Tascam units:
