Hi guys , saw a nice SG Standard ‘61 Maestro Vibrola today , the red is nice but man is the serial number huge ,dark and ugly ! almost like if it was done with a livestock branding Iron

I know there is nothing we can do about this but is it me or it could be a little smaller ?

It must be the angle of the pic, because that font looks too big, even though it's clearly not a fake.

Looks typical of recent year serial number stamping.
The digits are condensed compared to previous years.
Can't be bothered by something like that.
Play the guitar, not the serial number.

I agree it’s not very refined. But I don’t get to excited about serial number fonts etc.

The other thing to consider, is what’s more frustrating. One that appears be branded in, although very legible and clear.

Or... one that is barely legible when you buy it due to a light impression and then a thick coat of paint that gets posted on a dozen sites saying “I don’t what guitar this is, or, what year was this made”

We are a fickle bunch. Lots of rustlings on minor stuff these days

Your answer above where you said it's not very refined was what I was thinking , they can stamp them smaller without the tar black numbers ,
anyway ,I've changed the title , little less brutal ! :D

Doesn't bother me in the least.

It's a big serial number. But it's gonna be easy to see it for decades and it's gonna be really difficult to sand out, if the guitar is ever stolen.... and probably tougher to fake too.

    not a big deal.

It is a bit deep and dark, but I compared it to my SG's S/N ('69 Standard), which has 6 digits. If it had 9, like yours, it'd be just as wide. Buy a vintage SG and you'll have one with a shorter S/N. Incidentally, what you saw was a '61 REISSUE, not a genuine vintage '61 SG (which actually would be called a Les Paul).

Lastly, and sadly, that S/N plays havoc with the guitar's tone. Shame.

Funny thing is my '67 Special started out with 6 digits but over the years the 5th digit has gotten hard to read and the 6th is gone altogether. I emailed Gibson a while back about this and apparently it's not common but it does happen.

Also the modern serial number stamping process is one area the Chibson guys still haven't figured out. A clean, crisp easy to read serial number is the quickest give away if you only have pics to look at and can't actually play the guitar.

It's dark because Gibson uses black grain filler to contrast the pores with the finish.

Actually, these new models are officially called the "SG Standard '61". Gibson now only uses the word "reissue" in relation to the Historic models. The last USA "reissue" was the 2016 limited run '61 Reissue, and before that, the last year of the original '61 Reissue in 2012.

I would think the only one who might ever be irritated by this is your drummer...

Their method was definitely a little more refined in the 70's.

    Thats a lot better !

Here's my 2010 Classic , oh and by the way guys , a few of you kind of said shut up and play your guitar
and I agree at some point , and I sure know how to play but why don't they stamp it horizontaly all accross the back of the neck
in huge letters so we can see it better ! Come on , they can do this in a more refined way for sure !

Thanks ! this one is my third one and it's going no where !
The others didn't have the rounded 59 neck like this one has.
This crappy clip below I've done with my first one a few years ago ,
that SG Classic sounded really good ! Iphone couldn't take thought
but it gives an idea , sounded huge in the room .
