I just read the notes on the Gibson site and they suggest that my old SG is probably 1974. Perhaps the Deluxe model....
I went to the Guitar Store and they called "Guy in Hollywood" and he suggested that date for my serial number of 633727.

Mine seems a bit odd since the access to the electronics is from the front and folks from the guitar store suggested that it had a Les Paul pick guard. I have no idea, but I have had the guitar for a long time. Bought in mid 1970 and not much use by me. Previous owner used it a bunch. Any suggestions or ideas helpful. It also has "Made in USA" on the head.

Thanks in advance,
Randy

WELCOME TO ETSG !!!!

I see you read my post over on the Gibson board. According to www.guitardaterproject.org

Your guitar was made at the
Kalamazoo or Nashville Plant , USA
approximately in: 1970, 1971 or 1972

The control panel on the front as well as the Les Paul pickgaurd are common on some of the early 70s SGs. Too me your guitar looks like an SG Standard.

what Zep said!!

these following are 1971 deluxes

http://www.everythingsg.com/images/identify/photos/1971_SG_Deluxe_3.jpg

http://www.everythingsg.com/images/identify/photos/1971_SG_Deluxe_5.jpg

these following pages come from the 1972 catalog

http://www.everythingsg.com/catalogs/1972 SG Details1.jpg

http://www.everythingsg.com/catalogs/1972 SG Deluxe.jpg

and this is a 1972 deluxe

http://www.guitarsandeffects.com/images/b3sgDELUXE.jpg

note "gibson" engraved on the pups covers, as in the following modified 1972

http://www.guitarsandeffects.com/guitarimages2006/1972GibsonSGdeluxe/jjnewccc_045.jpg

and in some of the the 71s above

and note that in the 72 catalog pup covers don't have engravings on em..

1971 or 1972 could be the best candidates...

is your axe stock or has it been modified?are pick ups original?

can we have more pics and , if they are stock, the codes you'll find on the pots?

the code should be a seven digit one.

the first 3 digits being the code of the manufacturer, the fourth and fifth digits being the year of production,

and the final two digits being the week of the year they've been produced.( or if exceeding 52, simply a part code)

and i'd like to mark that a serial number like 6xxxxx might be 74 or 75 too.

but i'd stick with 1971 or 1972.

maybe more 72 for the pup not being engraved.

and maybe somebody more experienced on the matter will step up and give his/her contribution

welcome aboard !! :)

Yea, it is a Deluxe if those pictures suggest type.  It is exactly what is shown in the first set of pictures.  I can provide the details you ask for but it will take a little time.  My pictures were poor to say the least and the dust on the guitar made it look worse.  I never thought to look at the pots, but I will.

What amazes me is that the Pictures you sent of the 71 SG that were red with No Gibson on the Pickups (first photo) is exactly like mine...  Did they put the "Gibson" pickups on later?

Ok... I am looking at the Pots and some are soldered over. All looks clean and there is nice shielding throughout. Two number seem to be on the pots. The first number is 70-024 and the second is 1377141... so what does that indicate?

:Droolin: Those 70's deluxes are so nice, I want one.

I think Gibson stamped their name on the covers in '72 or '74. I'm pretty sure it was '72.

Welcome to ETSG randya! :) :) :)

You would sell it??? Why? It's a vintage SG................ :coolsmiley:

If it's the money..... whatever it's worth today, will be worth more tomorrow. And remember, vintage SG's make awesome heirlooms to hand down to the next generation............ IMHO. 8) 8) 8)
