Hi folks,I have a 2005 SG Special that I really like. When I bought it I had noticed that there were some cracks along where the fingerboard joins the neck in a couple places.Everything else was fine so I bought it.I'm hoping this is nothing too serious.I'm thinking worst thing could likely happen is the fingerboard could lift eventually and need to be glued down. Also thinking that the fingerboard is ebony and the neck is mahogany so the softer wood may be prone to separate from the other if the guitar was subjected to any stress. So maybe the cracks are just in the finish.I know there are many SG owners on here so wondering if any of you had came across this or heard of this happening?Should I be worried?Would appreciate any of your expert info you could share, thanks ,Cheers.

Hard to say, but if I were to guess I would say either the neck or fretboard was not left long enough to season before the build, and shrinkage has occurred. If the fretboard is still attached, it is unlikely to come loose now.

Thanks donepearce, yeah that makes sense ,I wouldn't have thought of that. When I look at it through a +12 optical lens I can't see any place where there actually is a gap between the board and neck, just a finish crack.I like your guess, I'm gonna go with that and forget about it,call it a beauty mark :).Thanks again,Cheers.

Isnt the neck bowed? How do you keep your guitar stored?
The dots in the fretboard looks so close to the finish that it could be that the finish wasnt properly scrapped at the factory and this could be the residue finish on the fretboard and there might have been some neck tension that could have caused bowed neck and maybe the finish cracked or the wood was stored inproperly in very humid condition and then very dry and maybe the wood just settled a bit and caused this. I wouldnt worry that the fretboard will pop out. Its extremely unlikely, even luthiers have a lot to do of they wanna remove the fretboard from the neck.
Did you buy it used recently and it was better or already like this?

Btw could we see the entire guitar? We just love SGs and pictures

The white / cream finishes are sprayed on really thick and tend to do that over the years.

I had a 2000 SG Special in the past with cream finish that did the same thing.

hey men, thanks for the replies.I usually keep it in the case or on a wall hanger,I bought it new for 700 Canadian about 2 months ago and the cracks were already there. The neck isn't bowed or twisted.I set it up after I bought it and like the way it plays(love those ebony fingerboards too).Hey Cerebral gasket you are right about the finish it is very thick. It's a 2005 so it's getting up there.Nice to hear that mine wasn't the only one that done this. Here's some of the few pics I have of her.Cheers.
