Wow, thank you so much! That really helped me to understand what type of finish that I want.

Anyway, does the regular SG Standard Heritage Cherry has filled or unfilled grain?

To achieve a perfectly smooth finish, you need to remove the present finish, then sand - I go to 800 grit. Then fill the grain

Then loads more sanding, and probably more grain filler. Then you can stain and finish with Nitrocellulose. I'm currently building a 12 string Strat, and I'm two days into the sanding phase.

I am with all the fellas who suggest abandoning changing the finish to your EPI SG.
If you don't like the finish, someone will. I would sell it and get one that has the appearance you prefer.

Finishing/ refinishing work to me is I either do it myself to get EXACTLY what I want, or else pay someone to do it. BUT beware, you get what you pay for. Don't expect a cheap quote to yield a premium result.

I can't offer any advice on a refinish, but that's not the only colour option for a 2020 Epi SG. They have a green one in the same model as yours, and there's also the Special in a sparkly red or Pelham blue.

Thank you so much for all the responses. I think I'm just gonna pull the trigger and have it repainted since I think I'm not gonna resell it anyway because I love how it sounds and the neck feel.

i will post the refinished guitar when it's done around next 2 months

I built an LP a while ago and got the Gibson cherry matched up pretty good. Grain filled in black then sanded back. Then cherry red dye rubbed on. Then gloss clear coat. Its a very simple, straight forward procedure. If your guy can get it right the first time should not cost an arm and a leg.

not really, especially when going from a satin neck to a full gloss or vice versa.

Are you too broke to buy another one? Its not easy to do a guitar finish and could cost you as much as buying another guitar if you want it done right. If you dont mind the learning curve go for it yourself you might enjoy the project! :yesway:

Thinking back on it, if Boca loves everything but the finish on his guitar, why not ?

It's not any worst than having $300 boutique pickups loaded on a $500 guitar.

Sadly, I am :( I can't afford the Gibson, and when I saw the Epi 2020 SG with P90 I know I must get it. For me the best possible combination is P90 pickups + batwing pickguard + stopbar + darker cherry finish + the new headstock. that's why I go with this one instead of the sparkling burgundy. At that time I didn't know that it's gonna be this hard to refinish a guitar, silly me

I also need to clarify that I live in Indonesia, where the cost of a Gibson is around 1300USD and the professional refinish fee is around 70USD. Check out the luthier's Instagram account, I'm gonna send my guitar to him this December
