Media Center Edition should run everything just fine. It is the same as Windows XP Professional minus the domain joining ability, which will not affect you in any way. Both MCE and Professional are much more feature packed than Home edition. Home much this affects you is another thing however. I wouldn't base a purchase on the operating system, unless you're looking for a specific feature that one does not provide.

In theory yes, but as I said, check the recording program you're going to use before making this decision. There are conflicts built in to it with some software. This is documented, so its easy to find per software package.
Before I became a touring/recording musician I was a professional recording engineer and before that a Network/PC Analyst for 5 years at a 3500 client call center.
