Hi all, so my user name is SG Firebird (not to be confused with SG Firebrand). I have an 1986 SG Standard that I installed Firebird pickups in to. The guitar started out life as a black (ebony) finished guitar but the finish flaked off shortly after I bought it. I've never seen a guitar do this before, it shed it's skin like a snake.

The Firebird pickups are vintage speced, they are Mojotone Johnny Winter signature pickups and they sound fantastic. Anyway, I'll try and get some pics of it up tomorrow.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Looking forward to your pics, and glad you pointed out your screen name. I read it as Firebrand until you said something. :D

As promised, here's the pics. Don't expect too much, this is after all, a guitar with no finish.

Thanks for the warm welcome!, I figured you guys really knew your SGs, and although the Firebrand is kind of a forgotten period in Gibson's long history, if it looked like Firebrand to me, you guys would surely see it.

It does bear some resemblance to the Firebrand, but with the inlays and appointments of a standard. Kind of the best of both worlds to my way of thinking. That is a nice looking refinish btw, way to take lemons and make lemonade.

Welcome. I’m originally from Rockford, too.

Well, you never know till you ask, Rockford is pretty good sized town, but how many Smittys are there?

The funny thing is, nobody actually calls me, “Smitty”! I use it for a screen name, but I have only ever actually been called that a handful of times.

Weird, huh?
