Hi, all. Just bought a 2011 SG [special with P-90,s maybe?] All the other 2011 SG specials on the net have a satin finish. The one I got is in Cherry Gloss finish, 2 P-90,s tune omatic bridge and tail piece, unbound rosewood fret board dot inlays vintage style tuners silk screen gold Gibson logo. The gloss finish is throwing me. It is a very nice guitar and sounds great. Wandering if some dealer exclusive or something? I would post a pic but I am having enough trouble posting this with my very limited skills. Thanks ahead for any input.

How many frets and does it have a guard?
If 22 frets, then modified SG Faded refinished to gloss with pup change.
If 24 frets, no guard, P-90’s, then SG Naked refinished to gloss.
Need a photo.

congratulations on getting an excellent choice of SG.
It looks like this particular SG special was only offered for one year.
Gibson SG names can be confusing... but nothing compared to Les Paul names.
Anyway the traditional SG special had gloss finish, white button tuners, sometimes
P-90s and sometimes exposed coil hum buckers. Older ones had the wrapover bridge
with no tailpiece.
In the 21st century, Gibson brought out the "faded special" which had a thinner and
softer finish, not the hard Gloss of earlier times. These were priced under the cost'
of a "regular" SG special with the gloss etc...
In spite of all the idiotic name changes, an SG with P-90s is simply one of the best.
so enjoy it, and turn it up. Also if you re-size your photos down to [email protected]
(500x700) you'll be able to upload them using the button at the bottom of your
post. Like this:

Mine's got Silverburst satin finish, '70s style oversize headstock,
mini-hum buckers, '70s style block inlays, no binding, no pineapple
decoration, baked maple fretboard, maple neck with '70s style "thick to thin"
neck carve (whatever that is) ... and I've done a few small mods to it.
I love this one, it sounds great with the minis and it ain't for sale.
Now lets see some photos...

2012 SG Special 70’s Tribute was also produced in 2016 under the name of SG Special 2016 T.
The OP guitar is neither as it was described as having dots, not small blocks.

Sounds like a '60s Tribute that was buffed to a gloss. That's the only SG that fits your description.

A good luthier could certainly buff it well enough that you couldn't tell the difference from a factory finish.

Those have Worn (Faded) finishes which means the grain is not filled. No amount of buffing is going achieve the same smooth glass-like finish of a gloss finish with the grain filled.

Good point, it would have had to been shot with a clearcoat.
