Browsing through Sweetwater's site I noticed their only SG Standard had top hat knobs with NO inserts.

    Check it out:

They might have blacked out the knobs in the pic like they did the pickups because of glare in the photo. :-\

Here is my kids SG. It was made in March of 2009. If they made any changes it was pretty recent.

I wouldn't think they would photoshop their pics just because of glare. Besides, the PUPs don't look blacked out; they have professional photographers so they probably strategically lit the picture so there was no glare from the PUPs.

Those are Top Hats, the others are called Reflectors.

weasel: Reflectors are Top hats with silver inserts. Same thing. I'm sure I've heard Gibson use both names.

And I didn't notice that, but you're right Dub.

I'm not a particular fan of the reflectors. Sort of reminds me of a 1970s hifi unit unit when these things were oh so cool. Black's smarter IMHO. (But not that important enough for me to go out and spend money on a different set..!)

Knobs or not, things just seem to be getting worse. I heard there was a shortage of reflectors last summer. I tried to get some from them and they didn't have any. Might be why this one has top hats. Frankly I think they look cheap on the guitar.

Wrong! Reflectors are not top hats w/ inserts .. there very different .. and, the fender amp knobs look similar from a distance but there not even close when you examine both in your hand! The reflector tops are hard to get hold of by themselves
If I have time I'll post pics of all together but no time yet!

I agree and I would feel cheated if I bought a Standard by mail order and it had those knobs on it.

Fender amp knobs and witch hats are the ones usually confused with each other mostly from people looking at pics of them. Fender amp knobs have a concave reflector at the top and witch hats have flat reflectors. Diameter may be different as well but I'm not sure.

By the way I know there is a technical name for them but most people do however incorrectly use Top Hat to refer to reflectors. Anyone can site thousands of examples from reputable places. http://www.elderly.com/accessories/items/MK010.htm

The thing is the knob is actually different. Top Hats don't have a cavitation at the top of the knob. They are flat. Reflectors do. I thought Top Hats were just a Norlin Era thing? Is this a harkening back to those dark days?

Guitar Parts Resource and others mix up the names.
The ES-333 had the top hat knobs. Some Melody Makers have them.
