I’ve been looking for one of these for a few years. They aren’t very common in this color, and all the examples that I’ve come across in the past were either modded or damaged enough that I had to pass. They usually have a lot of checking, cracks along the paint near the fretboard binding, and various chips and large dings. I’ve seen a number of them with a replaced pickup, guard, and tuners.
This is the cleanest, all-original example of a blue “Summer Beach” series SG-X that I’ve ever seen. Apart from a few tiny dings and some scratches on the pickguard, it shows no wear…obviously wasn’t played much at all. It photographs a bit faded and slightly bluer than it actually is…think more of a darker turquoise color than what you see here. I might take it outside to see if I can get a truer color representation.
It has a very nice medium-thin 60s neck, dark ebony board, and weighs in the 6 lb range. The neck has enough chunk that is has some substance, but it is very quick and feels perfect for me. Also, it’s a 24 fret model with a standard Gibson scale length of 24 3/4”. The setup is also just how I like it, with medium action…intonation is excellent.
The Gibson 500T pickup screams in a very pleasant way, with good note separation. The volume roll off is decent, but it takes a petty significant amount to clean up in humbucker mode. The coil split is actually much better than I was expecting - good enough that I’ll likely use it quite a bit. It can quack nicely when needed, and the single coil cleans are articulate and without muddiness.
I’ve become a huge fan of 50s/60s LP and SG Juniors, and this one compares pretty favorably to my SG Juniors…but with a hotter output, and more tonal variation. Don’t get me wrong - my 59 and 63 Juniors still easily beat this guitar in terms of overall sound and resonance, but this guitar is no slouch, especially in terms of feel…and of course lo, looks. I’m really digging it so far.
