Hi, I’ve had my new Gibson 2020 left handed SG Standard Tribute for a few weeks already. It’s a great guitar. I’ve already modded it, purely for aesthetics - I covered the pickups and added reflector knobs. These were simple changes but I feel they’re an improvement over the open coils and black knobs that came standard.

I’ve also added Schaller strap locks (as I do on all my guitars).

Two things I noticed when it arrived: 1) how dry the fretboard was. I had to condition it a few times to get it feeling nice and looking dark; and 2) how low the tail piece was set; it was so low the strings were touching the back edge of the bridge. I raised it up so as the strings cleared the bridge - overall it feels great to play.

My 2020 Special (LH) fretboard was so dry it was nearly white! Came up a treat with a couple of F.one oil treatments though. The controls are all back to front as well, shame Gibson don’t fit reverse taper pots on lefties like Fender do. Great guitar though!

    Nice!
Those are basically the same guitar as the SG Special Faded (SG Faded) but with a maple neck and crown inlay silkscreen on the headstock.

I've had several SG Special Faded in the past and always did the same mods adding pup covers and reflector knobs.

Great job on raising the tailpiece. Your bridge will thank you so that it doesn't cave in over time. I've had both ABR-1 and Nashvilles get crushed from a decked tailpiece.

Thanks for the kind words, it is a great guitar.

@IanD My fretboard was also incredibly dry... the backwards pots don’t really worry me as I have both Fender and Gibson guitars and I tend to just adapt as I move between them. I guess it’s just one of those things when you’re a lefty.

@cerebral gasket I’ve had a couple of Gibson’s delivered to me from the factory with screwed down tails - usually the strings have been just touching but with this SG the tail was fully decked and the strings were literally “bending” over the back edge of the bridge. My guitar being a lefty can be a PITA for right handed people to setup, either that or it was setup on a Monday morning! Anyway I always go over any new guitar and check that screws are tight, pickups are a sensible height, everything works and whether the setup needs adjusting.

Nice looking SG congrats, what pickups are in it? Do the pickups squeal now that they are covered, you might have to wax pot them.

It’s got the same 490R and 490T that come standard with this model. They are wax potted. I normally wax pot covers when I put them on to reduce squeal.

Well to be perfectly honest, I never thought about it until you mentioned it... LOL! I don’t really notice much difference between chrome and nickel. I am considering putting Tonepros bridge and tailpiece on there - if I do I’ll get chrome so everything will match.

Nickel turns a grungy green eventually, looks good on vintage guitars but not so much on something newer. Chrome looks best on an SG. :yesway:
