I just picked up this beauty. I've never had a guitar with P90s, so I figured I'd give it a try. The tuners are trash, and the fretwork was very bad. Lots of high frets. I did a level, crown and polish right away. The guitar plays really nice now and I like the neck. I'll be replacing the tuners when I get around to it.

I don't think I'm a fan of the P90s at all, so I'm going to get a replacement pickguard and put some HBs in there.

A beauty !

You just got it, give the P90s a chance. What don't you like about them ?

They're noisy, they don't have the thickness of humbuckers, or enough output for my liking. Others have told me that Epiphone P90s are not much good, and I should try swapping them out. I'd rather swap them out with some HBs that I know I like instead of wasting time trying out a bunch of different p90s.

I'll probably put in a set of Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers (worth more than the guitar 🤣) or a set of Tonerider Alnico II Classics.

Check these out first before committing to a hum bucker.

I put these in my '08 Gibson Classic and they sound friggin' awesome!
Aren’t those like the Gibson P90H Sidewinder, 2 coils sideways creating a… humbucker?

Try a Humbucker at the bridge for hi gain use and a P-90 at the neck for cleans.

Rather than swapping the P-90s for humbuckers that cost more than the
instrument did, I recommend you just sell that guitar or trade it in on one
that has pickups you understand.

Humbuckers won't fit in the P-90 cavities without expensive woodwork,
and you'll end up paying much more than you should. Better to sell it
and put the money toward a guitar you like better... IMHO.

There's lots of Epiphone bashing on internet fora, most of it is doo-doo.
An SG with P-90s delivers one of the classic sounds. Tony Iommi,
Pete Townshend and others have played awesome music using them.
I don't think there's any reason you can't use your amp controls
or your pedals to up the signal from your guitar.

I own one guitar with P-90s, an Epiphone ES-339 P-90 pro, and it's
one of my fave instruments. I got it wired with one of the P-90s reversed
so that in the middle position the guitar itself is like a big humbucker.
No noise in middle position.
That's likely an easy fix, not too expensive.
I like the middle position best anyway, so I'm a happy P-90 user.
You should be too.

Bad P90 pickups don' t exist but very good P90 pickups exist like Lindy Fralin for example.

Something else may be wrong with the guitar. I just bought a Classic P90 and I was expecting more noise. Instead they are whisper quiet for me.
One thing I discovered recently is that my house has 3 different circuits. Two of them aren't grounded or are grounded badly. One of them is grounded. That's the only circuit where I can plug in my amps.
About a year ago I bought a practice amp so I can play late at night and I almost returned it because when I first plugged it in it sounded like a moped. I did all the paperwork for returning the amp when, by pure chance, I plugged it in across the same room. No noise at all.
Since that revelation, I have learned what plugs to use and I have eliminated hum and buzz. Except for guitars with single coils, of course, those still buzz a bit, but minimally so.

My P90s have the same noise level as a telly I built from one of those $100 special where I put better piockups, locking nut, redressed the neck, etc.
As a matter of fact, I just plugged in my SG, my Telly and my Ibanez hollow body and none of them have any discernible noise.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago. Under $400 new. Can't beat it. I was able to adjust the action SUPER low. One high fret that needs to be taken care of. Tuners trash? Nope they work fine, and don't slip so far. With original strings still, I haven't had to tune this guitar in like two weeks. I don't baby it either. It usually sits on a chair or the kitchen counter. Best P90s I have owned. P90s to me are usually too dark, these are brighter than I'm used to, which for me is good.

The bad...the already mentioned single high fret. Also, out of the box the frets feel "crunchy". They need a polish out of the box.

The I wish list? I wish it had a flower pot on the head stock.

Really, you can't beat this thing with a stick! Non veneered body! Routes big enough to fit humbuckers if you want. Light weight, resonant as hell, awesome slim taper neck. I might sell my USA Special! Most fun guitar I have bought in a LONG time!
