NGD: Gibson Custom Shop 1963 SG Junior in Bright TV Yellow

Hi All,

Thought I would share some initial photos of my new guitar, an SG Junior 1963 reissue in Bright TV Yellow. Purchased from a music store in Japan. Balanced, light, neck feels great in the left hand. Had an issue with U.S. Customs that took a day to resolve, but the guitar got here with no damage. Came with a Lifton case.

Wanted a TV Yellow Gibson but the TV and Specials had necks too thick. This is slightly thinner and the finish and grain is equal to anything I've seen here in the states.

The two photos with bubble wrap are the first two I took after opening it. The fretboard was dry so that has been addressed. A keeper! A few more coming....

Didn't find a TV Yellow one in the states - all are cherry, which are great too. Found this in Japan as part of a special order. They also had a Polaris White one that sold the day before I purchased this.

They seem to get special runs over there that are exclusive to their market and not available in the states.

You can custom order any color you want now. Seems like dealers get more adventurous with the Standard and Special, but stick to Cherry with the Jr for some reason.

This was indeed a special run by Gibson Guitar Japan. I don't know why the American stores don't order TV Yellow SG Juniors from the Custom Shop - I think those would sell quite quickly.

Beauty ! In Japan there are very cool Gibson, nice finishes, is it korina or mahogany?

I love the Matsumoto Firebird

Totally agreed. Note: It looks like "Bright TV Yellow" is not the same as the regular "TV Yellow". I'd never heard of the color before this limited run. I really dig it though.

Yeah, that Junior looks great - I rarely see a thin TV finish showing the grain well, but yours does that in an almost Korina wood way and a nice bright yellow - lovely; congrats and enjoy!

That is a fantastic TV yellow.. and great piece of wood underneath.. congrats.. !! I have seen the Bacchus "mango" guitars i believe form their Philippine plant.. those also look fantastic in finish.. the LP and SG versions.. love the grain

Thanks for all the additional comments! This guitar is a keeper and I am now a fan of Japanese ordered Gibsons.

Yesterday I had a Wolfetone Dachswolff pickup installed. These are humbuckers put into the P90 shell, with the top of the P90 cover routed out. The Wolfetone humbucker I ordered was the Marshallhead - aged, with the A2 magnets (instead of the A5), reverse zebra configuration, and the vintage wiring set up (not the 4 conductor). It comes in at 9.0K, but with a smoother tone due to the A2 magnets. That sound....WOW! Powerful but smooth. Unfortunately, my residence does not allow me to full crank. I may need to rent a room for that. One of the pictures shows the back of the pickup.

Can't say enough good things about this pickup and the customer service by Wolfe. The pickup was made to my liking (of course, the Dachswolff doesn't come with a humbucker cover, so I went with the reverse zebra to get some color), and it was made and shipped to me in 3 days. And at a price that is $40 less than the comparable Seymour Duncan Custom Shop (the SD "humbucker under P90 dogear cover" is on hiatus now). I'd get another Dachswolff in a heartbeat!

I'm a Marshallhead fan, and I also run A2 magnets in them vs the standard A5.
