Hey all, long time no post here!

I got my first SG back in 2012 when I was in University and unfortunately had to sell it for financial reasons a few years later. Fast forward to this week and I got my second SG and first since 2012. This one is a 2021 model according to the serial number. The fretboard was very dry when I got it (picture) I've since changed the strings and used dunlop 65 oil on it and it darkened very nicely. Beautiful guitar, I'd have preferred heritage cherry like my old one but left handed players don't really get to pick and choose when it comes to available colours, especially in this market. I love this thing, the neck feels great and its light weight and doesn't neck dive. The only issue I have is the volume is very unbalanced between the bridge and neck pickup with the neck being louder despite it being screwed down the the pick guard and the bridge pick up raised quite a bit. The specs say its 490r/490t combo. Does anyone else have this issue with their SG standards? the 490t is also little lifeless in my opinion and im thinking of swapping it for something different. The 490r sounds great and I really love the neck pick up sounds. I usually play your bog standard rock from Green Day to Guns n roses and the Beatles and most in between. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance! Pic of my old SG as a bonus! ( last pic)

Nice guitar man, enjoy it!
I have an SG special and really like the bridge pup in that, but I think that’s a 490T too.
I have a few with Iommi humbuckers and they sound great.
Otherwise I’m on P90s these days in my SG juniors. Bare Knuckle Pig 90s. Amazing.
I’m sure Bare Knuckle also do amazing humbuckers!

Try the Angus trick before swapping. Level the bridge pickup with a mounting ring. That will bring the brighter side closer to the strings.

Maybe your bridge needs a little more output. You could swap in an A5 magnet to change up the voice. Or any number of bridge pickups in the 8-9k output range. I have a Saturday Night Special with an A5 in the bridge and also a Gibson BB2 in the bridge of another SG. This setup covers basically any sound I would normally play.

Its already pretty close the strings! The neck pick up is all the way down level with the pick guard and its still louder than the bridge pickup
Maybe try raising the pole pieces on the bridge pickup and turn the neck volume down to 8.

CONGRATULATIONS.....ROCK THAT BAD-A$$$ !! You sure waited long enough !!!

I got the same one (2020), w/490's...I got them out of the axe b4 I even played it...U cant go wrong w/'57s or '61's (one of each ?). U kno, a few other players here mentioned that they yanked the 490's too ! Cant say I blame them either.

OOH...the SG on the bottom is KILLER, what Pickup's were in that years Standard ('57's eh ?) Selling that must have hurt.. OUCH ! Condolences etc....
