Check out the used pedals at GC. I have scored some gems there. You might also want to try out used ODs as well besides distortion. Some of my favs right now are EHX Soul Food, Joyo Hot Plexi and Vox Tone Garage V8 Distortion.

I hardly ever use any pedals but I always had a Boss DS-1 and a BD-2 handy. e.SG save some change here and there and soon you get enough for it. They sell second hand really cheap. Joe Satriany used a DS-1 on his pedal board. DS-1 usually sell for $25-$40. BD-2 sell for about $50 - $70.

Back to pedals, and some of you folks ain't gonna like this. I've bought 13 pedals this year and, errrm, ok I'm a crap player and don't really know what I'm talking about, but even us plebites have opinions: the more expensive pedals are better! The MXR custom badass costs about the same as the EHX Soul Food and TC Electronics Dark Matter combined, but it does everything those two can do combined and more and with much better quality sounds, build quality, everything. Sorry, I'll be off now before I get twatted.
