A retired Bell Labs engineer and nice gentleman is building a clone of a Fender Tweed Champ. The cabinet's dimensions are for an 8 inch speaker. I have never owned a Fender Champ, tweed or otherwise, nor have I owned a clone of a Champ, tweed or otherwise. I'm looking for smooth creamy breakup because I have other amps for more headroom. There are lots of very, very experienced musicians and guitar players that hang around here, so, I would love some recommendations. I am open to both ceramic and alnico speakers, although the Tweed Champs came with alnico speakers. Thank you.

May I ask---- does it have to be a combo? Can you friend make it a head only unit--- allowing almost infinite speaker/cabinet options?
Aint tat what I used to say to you everytime you would get a new combo Id sayget a damn cab then you ca get heads cheaper saves ya cash in the long run we all know we are going to get more than one amps I have 2 combos and 5 heads
LOl yeah the only reason I got the orange cr 35 besides wanting one was I needed a new tuner and most were 80- 100 $ the cr was on sale for 205 so I got a amp and new tuner. The only reason I got the bh15 combo was I was going to buy a new green back speaker 140 $ and I found the bh15 with the green back for 240 $ its okay to be a cheap bastard as long as your still getting the best gear ya can along the way.
The cabinet is already made, so, the speaker has to fit into the tweed champ dimensions. It's just a practice amp.
I would go for one of the Webers that's what's in this one and this guy builds some nice amps I have one a 87x clone and I had a jtm 45 clone.
I have the Weber Signature 8" ceramic. Love it. It is the smooth cone, NOT the ribbed cone S model, which has later breakup. From Weber site. Looks like out of stock at the moment. http://www.tedweber.com/8sigf "For all Champs with 8" speaker and to replace Chicago Jensen C8R, Oxfords, and other 8" speakers. 8", 10oz ceramic magnet, 15 watt, 1" voice coil, straight cone. Warm, crunchy, early breakup, aggressive. Will fit in tweed and early BF Champs. (this refers to champs with 8" speakers)"
WGS is news to me. I hadn't heard of them. Lots of good choices. I think I'll wait for the smooth cone Weber Signature 8"
