Am I the only person who has trouble finding Gibson-brand SG cases that actually fit SGs? :(

I have bought three of the standard "reptile-skin" SG cases from various places lately, with the Gibson logo and combination lock. All three have the same problem. Once you shoehorn the guitar into the case, the neck rests solidly in the notch close to the body. But in all three cases, the neck "floats" above the support that is close to the headstock. In one case, there was a good half-inch gap between the neck and that support. Not a big deal, perhaps, but I think when I close the case the lid presses down on the neck, and I'm not sure that's a good thing. My solution: stick a towel under the body of the guitar to raise it up a bit so that the neck sits more level, but that's ridiculous for a case that costs $129 -- and I notice Musicians Friends has even raised their price to $179. Who makes these things anyway?? :(

mine fit tight at first.. but it doesnt anymore.
the trick is, you gotta put the bottom(bottom strap button) in first, then put it in all the way. If you just set it on and push down its a tight fit gettin it in there.

The case for my Ebony SG Standard is very tight. I have to force it.
The case for my Heritage Cherry SG Standard is just right.
Both are recent purchases. And both came still sealed in the original factory boxes.
1 came with the inner satin cover and the other didn't.
Definately some diferences though both made in Canada.

My Canadain TLK cases fit like a glove.

But not all TLK cases are the same. They make a cheaper no name model that does not have the pillow where the body goes to prop it up.
And im not sure but I think there is allso a second case manufacture for Gibson

The original case for my SG is falling apart, so I am also looking. There is also a company "Rockcase" which make cases for SGs at reasonable price. See it here: http://www.aage.dk/Shoppingsystem/vare.asp?varenr=31060
I tried how my guitar fits this and a contemporary gibson case, and they were quite tight fitting both. That is ok with me. The gibson case has the pillow under the body and as far as I saw supports the guitar better. At least when we talk SGs with the more pronounced back tilt of the neck. My early '70s SG with a more flat neck angle will tend to hang a bit by the two neck supports and should have some extra padding to support the body. The gibson case is appr. four times as expensive as the alternative case, and both would need modifications. I still need to find somewhere to test the fit in a TKL or SKB case.

Uh, thanks everyone, I guess. But if y'all would read my question, you'll see I'm not griping about how TIGHT the case is. I'm actually griping that the neck supports DON'T SUPPORT THE NECK. But it doesn't matter anymore, because if you read my latest post/whine, you'll see that I discovered -- to my dismay -- that Gibson doesn't even sell these cases anymore! Michael

Hi I have the same problem and you will find the problem stems from where the neck starts ie at what fret. The new SGs that all the cases are made for has the neck all the way up nearly the last fret, however yours and mine actually have the neck start further up the fret board. You see the new cases have some inbuilt support under where the neck joins the body and as such when you place yours and my antique SG in the case that support block is too high and leaves the SG sitting at an angle not straight. My suggestion is to get some fitting moulded foam for the back of the guitar so it can be lifted up permanently, the headstock will then rest on the support evenly. Why did gibson make this manufacturing anomaly, well you can only ask them.

Note when my 76 SG was purchased 2nd hand it actually had some authentic gibson foam siiting under where the neck joins the body along with an authentic ember guitar strap and authentic orange case, orange inside the case. Note for your own satisfaction go into a guitar store with your SG and compare to a brand new SG then get someone to put the brand new SG into a brand new case then you try yours.
