I've narrowed it down (I think) to between '70-'75. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
First things first - I've got no pics.
Some features:
Six-digit (no letter) serial number
"Made in USA" on back of headstock
(Both of these suggest b/w '70-'75 - "Made un USA" didn't appear 'til 1970, and the 6-digit format was changed in '76.
BUT, apparently the Kalamazoo factory kept using the 6-digit serial number into the late '70s. So that may be important.
On the other hand, from what I understand, that factory only produced "higher end" Gibsons. I don't think an SG Standard qualifies,
so I think I'm safe thinking within '70-'75.
Rectangular fret inlays
Harmonica Bridge (not sure if it's original, though, because there are dime-sized indentations in the wood around the existing stud pieces - that may suggest it originally had a TOM. Not sure)
Gibson logo and crown on the headstock
Nothing on the trussrod plate
Pickguard on lower half of body, just barely comes up b/w the pickups.
The pots aren't original, so I can't look for telltale numbers.
There are some pics on the site I've tried using for comparison, but it's kind of tricky. There's a '73 catalog showing one that looks very much like mine. The pic's too small, though, and I can't say for sure.
The only thing I can think of is that if I can eliminate the possibility of late-70's production in Kalamazoo, then it's likely it's from b/w '70-'75. If that's the case, maybe some of these features can narrow it down further. So if I knew that there was only one or two years in that period where Gibson wasn't marking the trussrod plates, or something like that, I'd get a little closer.
Don't quite know how else to do it. Can anyone help??
