Sorry I took a while following up.
I eventually got the material, and after a ton of other way less fun jobs, I got round to cutting a guard. Not perfect, but Im fairly happy with it.

A tension adjuster I ordered for my '78 Bonneville in 92, arrived at my old address in 95, a month after the bike was stolen. At least they were reliable, if not timely. Yep, it's a true story. Hand written note from someone named Nigel said "Sorry for the delayed shipping. Let us know if we can be of further service." I did sell the part a couple of years later at a profit., but you always pay extra for same day service.

The guard goes slightly under the overhang of the spring, but the spring doesn't actually connect with the guard. It's how they appear to be on all the photos of the genuine article. I'll take a close up later on.
I thought I was going to have to swap the pup for one with a long leg baseplate in the bridge position because the lack of a pickup ring makes it sit 1/4" lower. But in the end I got away with cutting the springs in half and that gave me just enough adjustment.
Then I got lucky. Someone was selling an unknown pair of humbuckers on eBay with HV58 written on the nickel baseplates. I gave him £20 for the pair and after a little research I think they must be Entwistle HV58s. They are very bright and articulate. Perhaps too bright for my SG, time will tell. This guitar seems pretty bright and snarly already. I may end up putting them in my slightly dark sounding 335. The neck pup is fat, clear and perfectly balanced with the bridge. I'm very impressed. If they are Entwistles Ill be buying more. (No affiliation, just credit where it's due)

It only just misses as the spring straightens out, but it just clears it. Nog that I'll be going wild with the term anyway.

It's just an unbranded one from a place called BlackDog Music Supllies on eBay. £12.99. Ive had quite a few bits n bob's from them over the years and they always seem to sell decent quality affordable gear.
Ive never used a roller bridge before and Ive heard a lot of complaints about them robbing sustain so I thought I'd just dip my toe in the water so to speak! It's seems really good so far though and I honestly can't see me upgrading it. Setting up the intonation was a bit fiddly but nothing horrendous and there is LOADS of adjustment available. Way more than a standard TOM bridge.
My issue with the TOM bridge was that the saddles moved fore and aft when the trem was rocked which made tuning stability a bit hit n miss. This was compounded by the play between the bridge and the studs and the stud threads and their bushings.
The roller bridge addresses the saddle issue as well as the bridge to stud play because they are locked with a grub screw.
To reduce the stud to bushing wobble, I wrapped the threads in a bit of plumbers PTFE tape. I expected it to be a real tone killer but I didn't really notice any adverse effect.
The results are good in so much as there is almost zero play in the whole system now. Although Ive been so busy with work that Ive not really had time to play her in yet.
All in all though Im really happy with this guitar.
