In part, it's probably because Fender produce so many themselves; it's a big part of their product range. Personally, I think that's because Fender instruments were designed to be simple, robust, bolt-together instruments - there's not a lot Fender can do without 'gilding the lily'. So relicing has opened up new avenues to 'add value', (although I don't personally perceive relicing that way, it does add to the price). Gibson have more room to add fancy inlays, tops, grades of wood, historically accurate construction, and so on. As a result, it's more sought after amongst Fender's customers, and some have taken to doing it themselves, believing that they too are adding value... Hmmmmm.

But it may change, $20,000+ for a Peter Frampton plane crash Les Paul? How about $6,000 for a 'heavily aged' SG?

    Imma relic my 2017 standard.

From what I understand, if I just stare at the headstock, it will break.

If you ask me, this guitar has been completely wrecked by the addition of those grover tuners. It surely is neck heavy and that's the last thing you want on an SG.

I’m relicing all my guitars. I estimate the process time to be somewhere around 20-30 years. The job is actually really easy. Right now they are in fact all busy relicing themselves in their stands while I’m having a nice hoppy beer. All I have to do is play them every now and then.

They've done a ton of relic'd les pauls (collectors choice for example)...without even thinking about the fender thing, I think its odd that they haven't done many SGs. Even as collectors choice, I always wondered why they don't do an SG in that series...

I'm also gonna relic my 2017 standard, but I'm gonna put some black and white electrical tape stripes on it and make it an EVH frankenSG.

    It'll sell, yo. Don't hate.

Isn't the Epiphone Worn G400 a relic? And an "aged" fingerboard?

I consider them more in the "matte finish" category rather than "reliced". There's no faked buckle rash, manufactured scratches, chiseled chips, or deliberate dents.

They just come with a thin flat finish.

True, but the advertising is trying to suggest it. I'm actually surprised they haven't gone for a specific relic release, but maybe their market research tells them not to, and limited edition year models work well enough.

But they have - I linked to it in my post above. $5,999 for a reliced SG:

I just wish they'd make an unreliced equivalent in the USA range, there's a beautiful carve to that body. 'Shame about the damage....'

That's insane, specifically that nice gash. I remember years ago working at guitar center when the fender relics came out no one (not even the fender reps) thought they'd sell, especially the american versions with a price tag higher than mint. It was still cheaper than buying an actual real old fender, but the fact its fake just lumps it in to the whole "distressed" pop culture fad of the last 20 years or so, and I really can't see much of a demand for these as a collectable down the line. I bet you'll eventually see guys properly painting a relic to restore it back to original. I don't think that SG will ever fetch $6k again.

Speaking of collectable, basically any axe you have now with rosewood just appreciated in value :p
