    Hello folks,
the pickups in my 2013 LP/SG reissue maestro vibrola are a pair of custombuckers but i want to swap them for something else with much more clarity on the wound strings, especially the neck PU which is definately too meaty . I hesitate between two pairs which got particulary my attention. The first is a pair of Righteous Sound RAF 1. I do like what i have heard from some YT videos. Lot of clarity and this A2 mojo that i have always loved. But a friend of mine insisted to also consider a pair of OX4 Lo-wind A4 pickups. They have a very good reputation but from mostly LP users. SG is another beast and i really don't know how they will behave in it compared to the RAF . That's why i need your advices, especially from users who tested both of them in a SG.

I don't have a clue what these sound like, but I have a clue on how to make them sound better :)

For the neck pup, lower it at ring level or even lower. It'll gain a ton of clarity and lose all boominess. A simple screwdriver might be your best friend here.

Here's how I set most of mine.

that's what i did, spent a long time, lowered pickups , especially the neck of which the height is a little more than 4mm , raised up the pole pieces etc. but unfortunetley i can't go against the intrinsic nature of these custombuckers which are definately beefy and muddy on the wound strings.

Oh well, at least you tried. So many people just replace pickups without a clue that they can get better by lowering them. They replace them again because the new ones behave the same.

Of course. for the neck pickup , on the E low string it's 4,6 mm ( between the bottom of the string and the pole piece) and 4 mm on the first string.
One of the other problem to me is that both pickups have the same DC resistance (8,3K) and it's a mess to make them really well balanced without losing the best of them. This neck pickup at least will not stay on this guitar for this first reason.

I can give it to you, but it is pickup dependent. Pole piece to unfretted string, low E on my SG is 6mm for a Probucker. 5mm on my LP for a Tyson Tone Precious and Grace PAF.

the max i tried is 5,5 mm but the pickup sounds there "liveless" to me. The fact is i can't resolve this equation. This Custombucker neck pickup sounds pretty good in fact , i will keep it and it will be perfect in another guitar for kinda muddy blues songs :)

Sorry, my eyes can't measure a fraction of a mm, neither can my ears.
