I have a friend named Charlie who has been performing a one-man-band act on the streets of S.F. for over 50 years. He has made a fair living at it until this year. Living in a tiny house in the Fillmore and having no kids he's been comfortably living the "artist's life" with his missus of 45 years. Now he's in a pinch. He's had to sell off his collection of 1960's concert posters and his beloved Ford Country Squire wagon that went to over 800 Dead shows. "I haven't really planned for retirement since I didn't plan to retire." he told me in an email recently. I wonder how many street performers are in that same boat?
