...and of course Steve Morse does not play a SG. The opening act however, was a Canadian band called Monster Truck and their guitarist really put his SG through its paces. Of course all threads are worthless without pics, so here is one of the very few good ones I got.
Every time he bent the neck to lower the pitch I would cringe, but these guys really rocked and had an endless amount of energy. Pretty impressive and I was thinking that a) Deep Purple would really have to be on song to beat this, and b) I would be pretty happy playing in a band like this.
Of course, then Deep Purple came on and completely slayed it. They did play a little dirty though - their sound was significantly louder than that of Monster Truck. I could feel the sound waves hitting me when the bass drum sound check was done. Even with ear plugs, my ears were still ringing after the show - I wonder how those people felt who did not have ear plugs.
We saw them before in 2014 and that was the best live show I had seen at the time, but they really seemed to enjoy this show more and we could tell. Deep Purple's performance was just phenomenal. They really put on a masterclass and judging by how much they smiled, they knew it!
Opening for DP must be a real honour, but I would imagine it is just as humbling. At one point Don Airey was playing a couple of runs on keyboards and Steve Morse would then play them on guitar - I think he missed one (shook his head and acknowledged Airey), but thereafter he got them all right. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me...
On a final note, seeing just how much Morse manipulates his sound through use of his volume pot and pickup selection made me realise that I still have a long way to go. The camera zoomed in on his hands a lot and we could really see all of the adjustments he makes between notes. Phenomenal player...
