Hi there, As far as I like the LP (SG) Custom, the bridge pickup was always too harsh and shrill. At least to my taste. So I found a Dimarzio Super Distortion and it's really another guitar since then. Really a nice improvement over the stock pickup. With a Marshall it's a perfect match, cleans are not so bad too though it's better with distortion hence the name.
i also replaced the bridge on mine with a dimarzio.. (paf). much better then the Hot CH pick up. but maybe add a pick up cover just to match the two other ones.
Sure it is better and I'm pleasantly surprised with the Super Distortion. A gold cover version of this pickup is made by Dimarzio but I couldn't find one here. The only available ones I could score locally were the double cream and the double black, not even a zebra. At least it's the same color as the guitar finish :-) I may try to get a gold one though.
i bought the additional cover alone/spare part and added the pick up in/to it (+wax bath) be aware of the pole pieces spacing though.
I guess the gold cover is really specific to the pickup, it's a 12 holes cover. I'm not sure if it's available as a spare part. It looks like the pole pieces are also gold on the full gold version. I'm going to track down a gold one if it's still available, in the meantime I can play the guitar.
Too late for that, but have you tried to lower it ... substancially ? Harsh and shrill is usually heard from a bridge humbucker that is set too close to strings ... or from a Tele
Sure I tried to lower the pickup first, but even at the lowest setting I tried it wasn't that good. May be the original pickup fits better darker sounding guitars. Anyway with the new pickup it's easier to dial into a good sound without spending hours with a screwdriver ;-) Tele bridge pickup, when you find the good one it's heaven.
Option 2: Sell it, get a black one, rip the other covers off = b!itchin guitar. (admittedly not an SG shown here but who can argue against a V)
There must be something wrong with me. I have never liked the V - and I'm getting real close to 70. Even if you make me apologize a thousand times, I still won't like the V. To me they're just plain ugly. Oh well, I'll live with it. Now, the SG ... there's a beautiful guitar.
That looks way cool with the full batwing scratch plate. I’m about to have one put on mine, W/B/W, just like a the original!!! I’ve also added a Bigsby B5, I’m doing the 66/67 Glen Buxton conversion!!! Did you have any trouble fitting yours? I’m trying to get mine as close to the original as possible, thinking about a ABR1 bridge as well, but not sure if it’ll fit, or I’m gonna have to re drill the anchor post!!! Have you any more pics?
I didn't care for the "V" until I finally saw one in the flesh. They are kind of like a Gretcsh in that they look great when you can get up close and personal with them, but are difficult to capture the essence of in a photograph.
I picked up this Invader a few years ago and it came with an old Super Distortion at the bridge and a 490 at the neck. Turned out to be a fantastic pickup combination. The SD really sounds nice in this guitar.
The full batwing SG is not what I'm looking for, at least for my Custom. On the other hand if I can find an Epi 310 to modify in a three pickups way like Glen Buxton I absolutely will ;-) Though the pickups had gold covers.
V is a really nice guitar, the shape is unique and it takes a bit of experience to play while sitting. I'm a fan of Albert King :-) I like the V and the SG, though the V is like a vintage Cadillac with thintails ;-)
