Hey all, I want to ask your input in this. I've recently ran through some interviews and clips for Les Paul (the guy), and it suddenly occured to me that the Les Paul is probably THE Supreme guitar. The Telecaster was basically a plank of wood, and the Stratocaster is an update of a plank of wood (both guitars are great soundwise though). I know that the SG is the "rebellious son" of the Les Paul, and is much more comfortable, and maybe even a bit more attractive in a sense. But the Les Paul is the legend before the legend (SG) and it has stood the test of time of virtually ALL genres of music. The SG had a lot or rock music history and few blues, etc. But I think that the Les Paul had been the standard of the history of all guitars. But the good thing about SG's are that: 1. They are MUCH, MUCH, MUCH lighter and comfortable than the Les Paul, 2. They have a unique sound 3. They can be more attractive in most people's eyes. But the Les Paul has 1. The LEGENDARY sound, 2. The LEGENDARY look (elegant plank of wood, would you agree?) and the nostalgia feel to it. I've seen many guitar models, but I think the most faithful to the original are the Custom's. I'm particularly fond of the Heritage Cherry Sunburst and Wine Red finish. But yet, I still think of the SG as the "all-around" guitar, especially in the comfort zone. I'm not asking which is better, but I'm just asking which would you pick, and why?

I personally would go for the SG; not because I own one, but for some key reasons.

One being the cutaways; the Les Paul is nice but the SG has unrestricted fret access even to the higher frets; whereas on the LP, most bodies meet the neck at the top around the 15th fret, and I personally play higher than that on the top strings more than occasionally. Another factor is the weight, I don't need a heavy guitar to get the heavy sound out of the SG with the right pickups.

Legends are legends because they've stood the test of time, but that doesn't mean anything after them is sub par or anything like that. SG's and LP's are both great guitars in their own right, and i believe it comes down to personal tastes about which is better.

    Hey guys,
As the owner of a few Les Paul standards and a badass (if I must say so myself) LP Classic Plus, I will say they are indeed the premier solid body electric.

PRS has a couple decades to catch up in the legend department, doncha know!

    Design-wise, they are kinda stupid.
The volume/tone knob arrangement never made sense to me.
Upper fret access? Pffffttt!!! Try my SG '61 and you actually HAVE access!
The pickup selector is never where I can get to it.
I prefer a slender neck, impossible to get at a decent price until just 5 years ago.

The sound, sustain and yes, even the look make it all tolerable though.

All I can say is, BUY ONE OF EACH!!!

    :-)

In the end, you probably need one of each plus a strat and a tele. You might as well cover all the bases.

    Of course, of course.

The correct answer to the question is :

    "Les Paul Custom"

(Please address all complaints to my secretary, Ms Rita Chevrolet)

I vote for a custom, I have always liked them, I love the ebony fretboars and you can find some with pretty thin necks, very fast.

    Sorry guys,
I will abstain from the vote, as neither candidate should be dimissed.

    Wait! Here's an idea!!!

Maybe the politically correct solution is to do as the school my niece attends.
She won the vote for Class President. The mother of another child created such an uproar at the "insult" of not winning, the administrators solved the "problem" by conceiving a compromise where they could BOTH serve as "Co-Presidents". W.T.F.?

As nauseating as I find such a contrived arrangement, I would never live without either guitar.

    Where are my antacids......?
