Some guitars we buy because we picked one up in a music store and fell in love. Some choices are influenced by our guitar hero's. Without a doubt, my love of SG's started with Iommi, and most of my SG's have some element of Sabbath in them, whether it be his pickups (Gibson Iommi's and John Birch Magnum), inlays, aluminum pickguards, whatever. If you were turned on to SG's by a favorite player, who was it?
One Barry Goudreau from Boston. Here's a link to a video from his solo album. I love that SG! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pWpZjMrJaQ
Hmmmmmm Robbie Krieger was the first person I identified with the SG, Then Clapton, Pete Townsend, Carlos Santana, Iommi, Duane Allman, Angus............ But I think it was Townsend that had the biggest effect on me. I bought my first guitar, an SG in 1971 and have owned probably close to 20 since then. 1983-4ish with my january 1961 Les Paul Junior.
There's an English guitarist / songwriter called Peter Townshend who used to play SG Special in the late 60s in this little band called The Who. He was pretty good. :coolsmiley:
A lot of players won't admit to being influenced by a guitar hero in their choice of guitars, but that's usually where most of our first exposure comes from. My 335's and white EDS 1275 are Alex Lifeson inspired, Al DiMeola made me want a Les Paul, but I'm currently just obsessed with SG's, and all things Iommi. (This at the age of 54) I think Tony has had a creative resurgence and has never played better. So many SG's, so little time...
I first got interested because of the look of the guitar and the deal was sealed when I first played one. But, since then, I've become a huge fan of Townshend, and I love Iommi and Angus. Plus, I love Clapton's stuff when he was using his Fool SG. So I wasn't originally inspired by a guitar hero, but I've been inspired along the way. :)
my first SG was a 69 that i got from a teacher in 9th grade cool guy! he gave it to me and was my 1st real "teacher" from then on i couldnt put the SG down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pete was a big influence on me but Angus too. Still when i was playing in a band as a young man, I thought an LP was what I had to have so that is what I played. Now I am older and pick whatever works best for me which would be an SG, LP doubecut or my strat. I still have an LP standard but only play it sitting down these days since I think it has gained at least 5 pounds in weight over the years ;D
The guy who inspired me was a local guy. Bruce Riddiough was his name. He had a 65 Standard. He could really play back in the day. I thought that guitar was beautiful. I still do. I could only muster up enough to buy a Special so I bought mine. He moved away in 67. Haven't heard from him since. Thank's for the inspiration Bruce...
