I have heard it-we all have heard it/said it. Funny thing is: Being a new owner of a HCherry STD (2004 just decoded serial number from lessons on this site -even though I bought it in 2005) My SG, at least with my amP (65 Fender Deluxe RI) is not dark at all. I play alot of Southern Rock and really varied music all the way to hardrock/blues/AC/DC etc., I run it through a POD XT sometimes/sometimes with just a tube screemer/sometimes straight into the amp-where's the darkness? I play along with Skynyrd/Allman albums and sound pretty much like one of the boys. Play a bit o jazz too-still no darkness. IS the dark rep due to amps? Or is it because of the Deluxe I play through?( which is a pretty sparkley amp). Opinions pleez-solve the mystery. Maybe I don't know what darkness is. I'm a long time Tele player so you think I would notice a major contrast since tele's are anything but dark.

    Dark?

Use the non-vibrato channel of the DRri, keep the treble about 4, crank up the bass to about 6, play at volumes about 8 on the volume knob or higher.

Or just do like the pro's, and close your eyes when you play. I'll be plenty dark then.

It's garbage. When people say SG's are dark or muddy I tell them they're full of it. MY SG's cut through a mix like a hot knife. They scream alot more than they are "dark".

SG is to Les Paul as Tele is to Strat.

The Les Paul is the dark guitar. People say "the maple top adds brightness". Bullcrap. The 9 pound boat anchor causes it to be dark sounding. It really doesn't matter what it's made of on top.

H2H - you told me what I thought but was afraid to say because of what you hear around-thats why I said that maybe i dont understand what dark is-your analogy of the tele and strat is dead on

I've played a SG special, standard, and now a 61RI through both a soldano HR-50 and a Mesa Dual Rectifier.

Heavy as hell, if you like, but definitely not dark.
