I would appreciate some help if anyone knows? I’m restoring an 03 Custom Shop reissue of a 61 LP/SG to its original white. I’m also trying to get it as close as I can to the actual specs opposed to the “61-ish” CS replica. I was told by a person at a reputable guitar restoration shop that these models had Tortoise/tortoid side marker dots. I can’t find any photo examples close/clear enough to tell. Anyone? Thanks BNW
The bursts from 58 to 60 did for sure. Not sure about SGs. I had them put on my melody maker that I had renecked. I love the way they look.
I think you’re right about the black but I know you’re right about the job you did. They look way cool. I appreciate your help
If you don’t mind, did you drill out the exact depth or did you go a bit shallow then sand the dots flush to the binding? What sort of glue ?
Hey Herbie I found something out that may interest you. I email with Dan at Mojoaxe from time to time on restoration Gibson stuff. He has a vintage 61 red and has always assumed the side dots were black as you and I concluded. He said he took a flashlight to his and saw they were actually tortoise! The fellow selling tortoise dots on eBay said that if they are any thicker than .060” they just end up looking black anyway. It took a bit but I was happy with how it turned out on my 61 reissue. Take care
