All of a sudden my HP Multi- Media CPU is having a melt down. When you start it up it kicks into the high speed fan mode, starts to start up, then shuts down. Any clues?

I really hate using my old laptop, that thing is still running Windows 98.

    Help!

    same thing here,
i've been told that 99% it's a dust clogged fan issue.
or a dust clogged cpu heat dispersor issue, or both.

some compressed air should do the trick, without disassembling the thing.
unfortunately i don't own a compressor, and i'm not confident enough to disassemble a laptop :(

    Are all the fans spinning?

feel free to laugh your ass off

but when the fans start spinnig too much this is my solution
    since a couple of weeks,

and they're starting spinning too much if i watch 4/5 youtube videos on a row.

tomorrow i'm leaving for ten days, after that a computerwise friend promised to solve the problem ;)

or i'll just consider a new laptop, this thing followed me wherever for livesets and stuff
and apart the severe blows it suffered
i just can't imagine the amount of crap that could be inside.

the thing is inherently fragile and it's like 4/5 years old now

Just out of curiosity do you smoke near your computer? My dad's friend did that and it completely clogged everything. He had to stop smoking in his house as a result.

my old computer started to have that problem and all I did was open it up and vacuum dust out carefully and then hit it all with a shot of compressed air. Worked much better after that. In summer when I was running processor heavy stuff, it still got hot but normal work like internet surfing or word processing was fine.

Another thing you might try is one of those cooling bases. They have extra fans and help keep things cool.

Problem solved!! Here's what I did. Under the main cooling fan and heat sink are to plates that touch together, I noticed there was some type on conductivity paste between the two......so after a good cleaning of all 3 fans and the heat sink, I went down to my local Radio Shack, bought more paste, generously applied, and now it's working like new, the fan hasn't even kicked into second gear let alone third yet. So far, so good. O0

Wease, i was going to suggest you spray a cocktail of human fecal matter and urine into the DVD drive, this cures mine when ever it plays up, but i see you have it sorted now so no worries.
